Unfortunately, it doesn't matter whether the image is displayed using the
img tag,
thumbnail tag or a
spoiler tag, the entire image is sent to your browser. Whether they are large enough to be resized, when displayed, doesn't matter either. The entire image will always be sent to your browser.
To avoid this, you must direct your browser not to load the images. The configuration depends on which browser you are using. In Firefox, there are several ways to block images, with an addon being the preferred method. See this..
