Maybe what I'm talking about is already solvable, but let me explain my problem.
Being in vacation, I use computers which are not very performing, neither the internet connection is.
When opening a topic, if the page contains lot of large images, practically I have to wait minutes just to see what is in there.
Thus my request:
1-could it be possible to have a general option on the index page to tell to the system NOT to download-for-display images UNLESS specifically requested?
2-if #1 is possible, then -once inside the open page- could it be possible to ask for downloading-for-display only a specific image of those on the page by clicking on the text-title of the image?
If those are not possible:
3-could it be possible AT LEAST avoid the download of the original image before the rescaled one? I say that because -during the many minutes it takes the downloading- I see the system starting to fill -slowly- the (sometimes big) original image, and only after that showing the rescaled one

If that is possible, it would be great.
On the other hand, I think some people on the forum (like me) do not know how to put/insert the photos at a very reduced size and only when a click is on, the picture becomes bigger. I propose that someone who knows how to do this, could make a little tutorial so as to remedy the problem of slow computers if everyone inserts their outcomes in that way.

I changed the subject of the topic, because it seems misleading: in fact, no one of the people making part of the site support up to now replied one word, not even a simply "No, no change is possible" or "this function is already available: do so and so...".
Hope the new topic better calls for support, as it was intended to be.
(btw: not even gimp-chatters having slow computers or/and slow connections have added comments: probably no one has such type of problems, happy they!)

Just as an experiment, here's an image inserted using the [ spoil ] [ / spoil ] tag to see if the image is downloaded then hidden, or only downloaded when shown:



Of course this will depend on everyone doing what you ask, and you might as well ask them to stop posting over-large images to start with.

Sorry about that. I completely missed this thread.

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter whether the image is displayed using the img tag, thumbnail tag or a spoiler tag, the entire image is sent to your browser. Whether they are large enough to be resized, when displayed, doesn't matter either. The entire image will always be sent to your browser.

To avoid this, you must direct your browser not to load the images. The configuration depends on which browser you are using. In Firefox, there are several ways to block images, with an addon being the preferred method. See this..

Thanks Kevin: when I clicked on the "show spoiler" the image appeared immediately, so probably -as Gnutux said- it has been downloaded before I clicked on.
Likely the same should be for "thumbnail" option, Akros.

The browser extension Web Developer by chrispederick might be overkill (with many tools you might not need), but it's the best one for showing/hiding images in various states.

There is a thumb-nailing option for image "attachments". However, most of the time, images are uploaded directly via a custom image upload feature. There are no thumb-nailing provisions for that.

I've never been a fan of how images are attached and displayed using the phpBB3 "attachment" feature, which is why I implemented the direct image upload modification. The other issue with thumb-nailing is that you end up with twice as many images on the server, albeit one is smaller, it still doubles the number of images files. Last check was around 40K files, which would double to ~80k with thumb-nailing.
