Hi, I've got an etiquette question: on many other forums, "necroposting", or replying to a thread whose newest post is quite old (usually on the order of some months) is frowned upon with few exceptions. There's nothing in this forum's rules about it, that I saw.

I've seen a few old threads get bumped in the short time I've been lurking this site before registering, and indeed as it seems to be a relatively slow forum, it might make sense that it's acceptable here. There are a few older threads to which I'm interested in contributing new replies and I wanted to check beforehand.

So...go, or no go? :hit:

Other forums are so silly.

You can post replies to whatever topic/thread you want, it doesn't matter how old it is..

Necro-bumping can be confusing because things evolve fast. A thread dating back to Gimp 2.6 resurrected to discuss something that is done differently on 2.8 is hard to read, because readers have to find the hiatus... Plus that ùore or less forces everybody to reread the whole thread to be able to answer you. If you make a new thread, then you are likely to give a bit more context in you opening post and that will be easier for everybody.

In other cases in can be better to necro-bump, for instance when I upgrade a script of mine, I resurrect the thread about it...

It's fine to resurrect older posts if the content is relevant to the topic.
Ofnuts has an excellent point. It is better to use an old thread for the same topic than to create many topics on the same idea. This keeps the topics in a better sense of order. Especially for uploaded scripts.
In short i would rather visit one long thread rather than many to search for certain criteria.

Also some people would rather not update and so they use older stable versions of GIMP so older threads do apply here.

I'm sure many would like to hear more from you clouds. Why don't you start a thread in the Introduce Yourself forum. You can let us know all about you there. You will be warmly received unless you give us a reason not to. And if you have any questions...any at all you should be answered pretty quickly. I find there is nearly always someone around.
Funny I know from experience, what brought me here was asking for help; there is a help forum and you can go there if it makes you more comfortable to do so.
By the way....the place isn't always this slow. People are away for the holidays and don't always take computers on their travels.
So it comes and goes in spurts. Someone may come up with a new script and get a lot of replies while people are testing it out. And then there are new tutorials. We are just due for another one (depends if someone's bookshop is busy). Then we get lots of answers to those too as people test their skills out.
Or maybe someone will have a photograph to be enhanced etc. a few here like to show what they can do and do it well.
Come on in and get involved :gimp

Spammers will go to very old posts to post their spam thinking they are hiding. Because of our most recent posts list, they can't hide from us because the post comes up like new.

So, if you want to necro post, be sure your reply is relevant to the subject and not some way to post links to spam.

Thanks for the answers. Seems like a sensible attitude prevails here.

Yes, agreed.

Well, I've never really been one for doing that on any forum. I tend to stay private, and I hope my posts over time will speak better than any one introduction could. Maybe I will, anyway, this time :)

Funny indeed, since what brought me out of the woodwork is that I think I can help answer some of the interesting questions on here. That said, I've mostly got a focus on G'MIC. I'd like to have also registered on their Flickr discussion group, but Flickr requires a mobile phone to create an account and I don't own one. :hit:
