I am having problems uploading my images to Gimp Chat. This just started about 3 weeks ago. I didn't have any problems up until that time. I haven't done anything different to my pc so this change seems to have happened for no reason that I know of.

I called my IP and they looked up my account and I have more than enough bandwith of 80GB/mo combining upload-download. I asked if they controlled my uploads and they said no and for the size of uploading I do, it is peanuts and I should have no problems if I can send them in emails etc then the problem must lie between my pc and gc.
I did some test uploading today to tinypic. I uploaded a file with 100 layers and was 13.1MB. gif. It took less than one minute to upload.
I have 8 GB's of RAM, 1-T of space, i5 core. :2gun

I did a regular image and saved it as gif, tried to upload it to GC and it just sat there and spun forever until I canceled it. It was, I think just over 7MB. I resized it to 6MB, still too large, I ended up putting it to around 3MB, then it would upload. :help

This is the question: Is there any way I can check what my maximum size allowance is before I save or try to upload so I won't have to keep cutting it down until it will upload.
Some of you smart techies out there might know what the problem is, cuz I shore don't.

help would be greatly appreciated :( :bluesad

Sorry that you are having problems, Molly.

Images files and attachments have been limited to: 5 Megabytes = 5,242,880 bytes. That should be large enough for most images and GIF animations.

Larger images should be uploaded to off-site image repositories.

I'll ensure these numbers are included in the Gimp Chat upload tutorial.

Sorry Tux, I don't know what I am thinking. I put in the wrong sizes. I put in MB instead of kb's
One i can't upload is 1.00 mb's
second one 642 kb's
third one 743 kb's

I had to downsize them by about half.

Hmmm, the only other limit is an overall (total size) limit. Maybe we've hit that...

OK, I've now removed the overall limit so give your file upload another try.

Other than that, file types are limited to the following: gif, jpg, jpeg, png, apng, bmp, tif, tiff

Non-image files xcf, zip, rar and such should be attached.

I wonder if anyone else is having problems?

This is a test image.
I forgot to check the animation the first time I tried and it went in. I renamed it and clicked the animation this time and it won't upload. It is 532 KB

edit: I cut it down to around 411KB so I am trying again
Image

so I guess I will have to keep them below 400KB

Maybe we hit the overall limit but I didn't think so . I'm not even sure why I had a limit in there.

O and I have been uploading fine so we didn't notice any issues.

It's working for you now so that's the main thing.

That is very odd, Molly. You're the only one having any problems.

Graechan uploaded this today..

Image

It's over 2 meg.

Can you download this, rename it and try uploading it?

Thanks!

I downloaded it and renamed it Graechan1.png, tried to upload and after 10 mins. I cancelled. Yes, I am probably the only one having this problem as usual.

As we have a "Manage attachments" option in the User Control Panel, do we have an individual limit on the total size of attachments? It's something I've seen on other forums. For instance GimpTalk limits me to a total of 500K

paynekj, we allow up to 5meg here so that's not the issue. Other members are able to upload large images.

What browser are you using? Can you try with a different browser? Perhaps, Opera or Chrome? Also, you might want to clear out your browser cache and temp internet files, if you haven't already done so.

Maybe by using the process of elimination, we can solve this. Do you have another computer you could try it on, a laptop perhaps? Do you have a neighbor or family member with another PC or ISP you could test with?

I'm tossing out things to try so you can narrow down the problem. I really don't think the problem is with Gimp Chat. If it were on this side, others would be having problems and we could duplicate the issue.

You've miss-understood what I was saying. What I was trying to get over is that other sites have a limit to the total size of accumulated attachments across ALL the posts that user has made.

On Gimp Talk it tells me I've used 4.31K of the 500K allowed, whereas here it doesn't give an allowance and doesn't add up the total (269.92K across 5 attachments) so I can't imagine it's the problem here and as plenty of people here do like to attach unviewably large images and nobody else is having the same problem.

Ah, I see what you are saying now. There are no "built-in" provisions for setting user quotas in phpBB. There are 3rd party modifications available but nothing like that is installed here. There is an overall board-wide quota but it is set to unlimited.

Maybe a failure of the Molly ADSL provider ?
It will not visible when surfing because download speed is always much higher but when uploading speed is less and hiccup during the upload (as too much time between 2 " pack" of data send ) may create the problem

Ok, I downloaded Google Chrome. First try, took 13 secs. and succeeded. It looks like the glitch might reside in Firefox which I have been using for 8 years.
I still want to use Firefox but I have no idea how to find what the problem is. I do clean the cache at least twice per month.
I am happy to be able to upload my images without chopping them down, so if I don't find the problem with firefox, I will use Chrome to upload to GC.

At least you now know what's causing the problem. :2thup

What version of FF are you using?

You could backup your Firefox profile folder and do a clean re-install, meaning that you uninstall FF and manually delete the Firefox profile folder ('cause it may not be deleted during an uninstall).

Then, perform a clean install of Firefox. You may have to go back an install a few plug-ins/addons but that's no big deal.

I would export bookmarks and take screenshots of your passwords (if you save them in FF), just in case there is a problem with your old profile.

Seems they are releasing a new version every month now.

I think 5 and 6 could have been more properly numbered 4.x.x. There wasn't any new technology innovations or major rewrites in 5 or 6. It's all marketing hype at this point.

I'm using FF 3.6.22 and it's still being regularly updated by Fedora. Version 4 was somewhat buggy and seemed a bit slower so I kept V3.6 around.
