Do you ever get ideas which you know you'll most probably never manage to create as they just surpass your own abilities.

do you have a go anyway or not bother attempting the idea.

I suppose I have three categories that my ideas fall into
1. I know how to achieve that
2. This will be a challenge but I think I can achieve the desired results
3. I have absolutely no idea even where to begin

he4rty: nice to see you around again, brother!
with the amount of ideas i get in all sorts of fields i'm bound to come up with lots of ideas that i will probably never be able to realise. for example, i want a bicycle that doesn't exist and i've asked some people who would know and they said "yes, that would be possible to make out of parts from other bicycles, but it would be very difficult work and take lots of practice and experimenting". i have worked with metals like silver, copper and titanium, but i have never welded in my life and i have never even fixed a punctured tire on my own bicycle, so i've just had to give it up. then there's all the times i started painting something and given it up because i'm just not good enough yet to get what i'm after.
i think i usually have a go. sometimes, like you say, i don't even know where to start the experiments, but i usually sit down anyway and after a while i get started. if the idea is that complicated i usually give it up in the end, though, and that's never easy! i can miss the idea long after i stopped trying to work on it and if it's something like a painting i save what i have and often try again. i hate it when i have to give ideas up!

Depends if you put an upper bound to 3) because otherwise, world peace, infinite wealth, eternal life, time travel, and Facebook privacy are in everyone's bucket list...

1. I know how to achieve that
Possessing the necessary knowledge to accomplish a task is essential.
Even though I may know how to use a hammer. This doesn't mean that I can build a proper house with only a hammer.

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime".
Chinese Proverb

2. This will be a challenge but I think I can achieve the desired results
Taking on or excepting challenges helps improve "personal growth". Having a positive mindset and or mental attitude toward the outcome of any such challenge. Can assist in keeping the focus on the task at hand, when confronted with obstacles.
3. I have absolutely no idea even where to begin
Successful individuals will tell you that the key to success is knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Learning how to delegate, asking for help and letting others show you the way are part of the plan. Successful people are driven and motivated — and when the going gets tough, the tough ask for help!

Do all the time he4rty. Sometimes, thought it may literally take years (trial and error; no joke), I finally figure out how to do something or find a tool that does it for me. Fun to put another check mark off our graphic bucket list it's what continues to motivate me. :)

Interesting question. I think everyone has ideas and desires that will never be realized.

I also believe an individual can accomplish most anything they set their mind to accomplishing. "I can't" never could and never will. One has to be confident and believe that they can achieve anything. Goals should be set high so you really have to put effort into reaching them. Goals should also be realistic. If you're 4' tall, your goal should not be to dunk a basketball. If you're tone deaf, a career in singing is probably a bad idea. :cool

There are two kinds of motivation, internal and external. External motivation is out of our control, but we can (and should) strive to become as self-motivated as we can be. One of the best motivations is someone suggesting that you don't have the ability to do something that you know you can do. It's rewarding to prove wrong, those who underestimate you. ;)

I know I won't be able to achieve some of the things I could do, simply because I'm not willing to put the time and energy into making them happen. Other things, require money that I don't have. My strategy is to focus on the important things and do my best to make them happen. I'll deal with less important things, as time permits. :hehe

Some of the best work I've done began as something entirely different. I find the best way for me to learn is by trial and error. Therefore, I usually fall into the category of: I have no idea whether or not I can achieve the desired results, however I will invest the time and hope the hours I anticipate spending will result in something worthwhile.

Definitely some interesting answer, so thank you all for replying.Maybe it wasn't overly clear in my initial post but the question was meant to be more art related ideas rather than a general ideas, still liked the responses though.

I think my goal is, the more I push with number 2 on my list....

"This will be a challenge but I think I can achieve the desired results"

Then hopefully I slowly get closer to achieving some of the items on my number 3

"I have absolutely no idea even where to begin"

I get these ideas, that maybe will work if I take the time to pursue it beyond my current ability, but I get so lazy that I rarely follow through unless I can immediately see how to do it. And even then, I seem to get distracted.

That's what brought me to gimp chat in the beginning. I had a bunch of ideas and no clue on how to implement them. That's the whole point of art, I think: experiment, learn, expand your horizons. Any which way you can. So really, including world peace, ideas are undeniably necessary for the human spirit and the attempted implementation of these ideas is absolutely vital for our growth, individually and as a whole.
