Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner.
You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.
It's not a good idea to have it as your main virus scanner. Every virus can get in and you need to remove it later. That means in order to keep your system clean you need to run the scanner every day. Doesn't that slow down your computer even more? Plus, that can turn out to be a big problem because lots of viruses, once they are active, corrupt the scanner. You've been lucky not to get a nasty virus like that.
The best free ones are
Avira and
Avast. Please consider switching to one of those. Avast is very lightweight too. Avira I think too, but never tried it. I've had experience with Avast for 6 years, either using it myself or family/friends. This is first time I've had (heard of) a problem with it. Mistakes can happen.
Gerard, I'll use linux on my next computer.
