I see plenty of people on facebook who don't use their real names.

I use my "professional" name (which does not include my last name) because that is what I use facebook for. I've been on fb for a few years. no one has ever "shut" me down

See now, I don't mind too much using this kind of technology to store non-personal data like music or the play video games. But it's when everyone starts trying to get you to hand out personal info, that's when I get cranky.

But the newest generations know seem to know nothing about privacy or basic computer security, and wonder how their parents find their post on Facebook about parties and sex.

I'm too young to feel like an old guy screaming "Get off my lawn.", but if that's what I got to be...

I mean, don't get me wrong. Facebook and most other websites are public forums. Companies scour them for personal data every second of every day. But the idea of willingly handing it to them...

facebook is ok as long as you understand that everything you put there is 100% public. I use a dummy email (well, it's a yahoo addy I made up just for public use) for facebook, I use my real name because it is how people can find me, I have no specific info there that I would care about the world knowing. I do enjoy the social aspect of it and have hooked up with old friends and family on there. However, the cloud thing...maybe ok for some things but I would not want personal/financial info on a cloud system.

I'm from a generation where a phone's a phone, a camera's a camera, and a gps is a gps. When you try to create a do all product, it only creates a device where other's can spy on you. Am I so right or what? lol

exactly. I've been using the internet for years - in the early 90's using an Amiga (hello telent, bbs, ftp!)

I have never used my last name in public, never put personal info out there, don't say anything that weirdos could use to figure out where my family lives...etc and so on. i have been very very careful.

if you do that, then you can relax and just enjoy yourself. it's not that hard. it's like being Street Smart.
