Today I went to open up a spread sheet that I have used many times (It is my budget sheet and I use it regulary to see how much money I have to play around with - if any), and it (Libre) wanted to update the program.
Anyway it was doing something which seemed to go on and on. Now, everytime I try to open it my computer freezes. I cannot even use my cursor or close it down except by the off button on the computer.
Has any one else experienced this? I think it is still trying to update as when I tried to open it before I got a blank box similar to the size of the updating window.
It has updated before but not caused this.

How can I stop the program from updating or should I if I can?

I have experienced this with other software on Windows. Sounds like a bad update. In these cases i have just uninstalled the program and reinstalled the latest version. Your budget sheet is probably saved within your docs folder and possibly will not be removed.

Thanks for the reply.
Uninstalled, reinstalled the latest stable Office. It still freezes my computer. I copied the file and even clicked on a blank file (new calc) Doesn't even open. All froze my computer even with the new install. I'll try the other Libre programs and see if they open. I'll edit the message if they do or not.
I can come online which means I have to open the Chrome program/browser. Gimp opens.

Edit:- First thing I tried was the Libre office, not a single program, that didn't open, and it froze my computer as well. It finally did open in Libre Office safe mode and finished it's updating as well. So I was able to open my spreadsheet from there.

I use the same program and have no issue with the latest update.
I'm using windows 11 and also use a Registry Cleaner? Have you tried one?
It sounds like, if you are a window user, your registry is missed up.

Sallyanne, try starting your computer and right away right click the task bar and select Task Manager.
Then select the startup tab and disable libre office.
Then restart your computer. Libre office should not startup when you turn on your machine.
NOW, go to your control panel and select to uninstall programs. Select Libre Office, and select repair install.
That may help.
Let me know.

If still having issues, try using the portable version and see if they still exist.

A quick search along the lines of libreoffice only starts in safe mode comes up with two possible solutions.

Make a new user profile https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/new-versi ... ode/121089
No good reinstalling LO the old profile remains (..same as Gimp)

Another solution that comes up is a hardware issue :
When you launch in Safe mode, tick the box "Disable hardware acceleration" and click the button "Apply changes and restart"

No opinion on either of those as the LO I use is a linux appimage and works fine.

I have used this program for some time and only when it decided to update did I start having problems. No I haven't used registry cleaner for quite some time. Dont even have it on this computer. My computer does auto maintenance almost daily.

Thanks for all your replies I will try all the advice given here and hopefully come up witha fix. No I haven't used regedit for quite some time. Dont even have it on this computer

@Rod I already disabled LO on startup. Thanks for the suggestion though.

@rich, I went to the user file and changed it to user.old and restarted the program and it is still freezing my computer. Noticed in the LO website that there seem to be lots of problems with this update. I cannot even open 'Writer'. Calc and writer were the main things I used in LO. I even tried the 'reset entire user profile' in the same window and it still froze on me when I tried to apply and start in normal mode.

@ 00111111 I will have a look at getting the portable but there seem to be lot against it too

May have to give in and continue using it in safe mode. At least I can get what I want then.

Edit:- Just tried 'Repair' in the part where you can uninstall programs. Will get back and let you know if this worked.
Nope, Still freezes. Oh well, at least there is some way to get in still.

@sallyanne
It could well be the "latest and greatest". A bit like Gimp 3 and Gimp 2.10 still being used, you can get an old version, there is an archive. https://downloadarchive.documentfoundat ... ffice/old/

For your current installation, I know you tried various resets but maybe a bit further and delete the LO user profile in Appdata / Roaming. Did you look at the hardware acceleration setting ?

I have created a new user profile - or LO did. Should I delete the old one or both?
Yes I tried the hardware acceleration in the safe mode startup window.
By the way I think the only customization I have done is to change dark to light or the other way round. Atm I am using charcoal.
EDIT
hmm. I just opened an old Libre Office Writer file without any problems. I'll try the other file again when I am finished with this one. I just noticed it was in safe mode
