Angered I am (not because of the expense). I adopted a cat a few months ago (neighbor had alreay had her spayed but she couldn't take care of her since she had 3 boy cats that were way too aggressive towards her) and it did have an eye issue which was diagnosed as herpes at that time. I didn't get a full physical then since the cat was not trusting of me and I didn't know if she would accept me or not (that was back in early April). Well, my girl finally did accept me and I did my best to take care of her but she was eating like a sieve yet not gaining any weight as I felt she should. Her eye also looked quite cloudy and I was concerned so I took her to the vet today and found out that she had Feline Leukemia (I did get her those shots back in April and asked if it was possible that it was a false positive but alas it was not). So, because I still have my boy to take care of (my cat Socks), I had no choice but to pay for her to be euphenized. If she was the only cat that I had to worry about, there's therapies that have a low percentage of success but I would have been willing to try them, but I can't take that risk; already risked my boy's health long enough and still concerned but he's had his FE shots every year since pretty much I got him 6 years ago. The doctor said as long as he appears healthy, to just wait until his next exam which will be in July anyway. Still quite upset that I had to put to sleep my little Sissy. Just wanted to vent.

Appreciate your comments AnMal. She first came around our houses (neighbors house across the street and several others) last Summer and many of us pitched in to feed her and such. She was, I'm sure, still a kitten then. My neighbor, again, had her spayed last fall since she didn't want her to have kittens (we do have a lot of cats where we live and not all have been fixed I'm afraid; lol). She still survived all winter coming in from the cold in my garage (we have a cat door for my boy) but she never would enter into the dining area (where the other cat door is). I put a cat bed in the garage for her and a shelter outside on the back patio (and did see her in it once; lol) but, until this past April, she would show only a little affection (very little) with my neighbor. She finally completely trusted me by the end of April and started coming in (and then staying in) the house. I too am glad she at least spent her final days in a home; just wish I could have persued saving her but the Vet pretty much conveyed to me it's a lost cause and if I had other cats, that she would have to be completely isolated until either the therapy worked or not. Oh well; again, I'm right now more angered then saddened in that I couldn't do anything to save her without risking the health my other cat and the cats within our block. How does a cat get FE in the first place? Just don't understand I guess.

It's not contagious.Cancers never are.

FE is an acception Gerard; it's caused by a virus that can be contagious unless immunized against. Even when immunized, there's no such thing as zero risk. It's one of the number one causes of cat death unfortunately. My Dad's cat Boots died and we suspect it was FE back during Hurricane Opal (he survived the Hurricane but died around 4 days later as I recall). He was getting sick several weeks earlier.

Lyle, I know exactly how you feel. Eight years ago we decided to get a cat and we were shopping at Home Hardware and there was a vet right next door. We saw a picture posted in the window, cat for adoption. We went in and it was a cute black and white female, and we found that the vet had already spayed it, so we brought it home.
I got really attached to it and it was so friendly but I never in my life saw a cat that was so hungry all the time, it even ate popcorn, Anyway, a few months later the cat was losing so much weight but eating like a pig so we took it back to the vet and it cost us $800 to have tests done and we found out that she had FIP's. (That is Feline Intestenal Peritonitis.......This is something there is no cure for and she kept losing weight till she was just bones so we had to have her put to sleep. It was so very sad because they can't tell you what is wrong.
What made us angry is that we think the vet should have waived that cost because he should have known the cat was sick.
Anyway, that is my sad cat story. We now have a male Bengal and a female mutt and love them both dearly.

Sorry to hear about your Tuxedo Molly. Yeah; it doesn't take long to get attached to these gifts from God. I didn't have much time to be Sissy's Daddy but am glad that I did at least for the short time that I did.

You've got my sympathy Lyle. It must have been a painful decision to make.
