I got a wild rabbit that runs around and eats grass in my backyard almost everyday.

you dont need to cut the grass if the rabbit is free!

:hehe i don't think 1 rabbit is enough to keep me from cutting the grass. I think i need at least 50 rabbits in order to not cut grass. So i am hoping that rabbit will bring back a mate and breed like crazy.

Hey, if you want rabbits, I can send you lots. They are multiplying like crazy and eating and ruining all my plants and garden.

What about a sling shot or a pea shooter? They come out every morning and evening. The large brown one is huge, and very bold. I can get right up to him before he trots off.

My cherry tomatoes seed themselves all the time.
In the spring when I first look at the garden, I see them coming up and I can indentify by the shape of the leaves, so I scoop them out and move them to an appropriate place where I can tie them up.

I see. I guess I never see this because I've always thought you were supposed to dig up the old plant and dispose of it, roots and all. Supposedly, leaving the tomato plant in place increases the chances of soil pathogens.

We do dig it up but there are always shoots that come up from seeds that dropped the previous year. I rotated my tomato plants to the other side and let Neil have the section for all his potatoes, grrrr. I also put my sweet red peppers on opposite ends, green in one section, red in the other so the bees will have to travel further to make all the peppers one color.

Maybe I'll just dry out a few tomato seeds and give 'em a shot next year.

I just picked a couple of ripe BrandyWines. Time to chow down. :hehe

My favorite tomato is Eva Purple Ball, it is an open pollinated heirloom, so they re-seed themselves every year.

How does that work? Do you do anything special to save the seeds?

I do save seed every few years, just in case I need them. But near the end of the season I just let one tomato ripen and rot in the tomato bed, and since it's a raised bed that is far away from the rest of the garden, I know that the volunteers that come up in the spring are those tomatoes. Open pollinated means they grow true to type, unlike hybrids that can all be different, depending on the parentage. To save seed, you take an over-ripe tomato and squeeze the seed stuff into a glass, and then I take a piece of cloth and tied it over the top to keep bugs out. Set it someplace like a garage, out of the sun, but somewhere that the odor won't bother you. Leave it for days, maybe even a week, until there is scum on top and a clearish whey liquid under the scum. The seeds will be on the bottom. Then you drain the scum and whey off, but don't let the seeds slip out, add water, drain, add, drain, add, until the water is clear and the seeds look clean. Dry the seeds on a dish and store. They can last for years.

Thanks for the info 2-ton. I'll try your seed drying method. :bigthup

Someone gave me another plant that is just setting fruit and they didn't know the variety. They said it could be a beefsteak variety or possibly a Roma. Either is fine with me. I'll know soon. I Like Romas for making fresh pasta sauce. Not too much acidity in those.

Just tried one on a burger and it was excellent. They're a fleshy variety. They're not as tangy as I thought they'd be. They' seem to be a sweeter variety. My favorite so far are the Chocolate Cherry Heirlooms.

You would probably like Cherokee Purple. They would taste more like the chocolate cherry but are a big beefsteak type.

Yes! I grew Cherokee Purple last year and they were great. I should have saved some seeds.

These were my Cherokee Purps and Early Girls from last year.

Looks like my mystery plant is not a Roma. The fruit is more round, like a beefsteak.
