I tried to make the mesh covering his eyes to look convex, but everything I tried looked strange due to the size of the eyes.
Any ideas on how to improve this?

If you have each eye on a separate layer, you could lay a gradient over one eye, then use displacement mapping to conform the mesh to the gradient.
