I always thought that birds only nest up in the trees. Well, our back lawn was getting pretty long and i mowed half of it today and luckily didn't kill these birds that nested on the ground. Just mowed right over top of them, didn't even see them until i was mowing the other way back. Saw 2 baby birds and an unhatched egg.


the mother was gone so i stole a photo of the nest, there are actually 2 unhatched eggs.


My uncle was afraid that they'd be eaten by crows since they're out in the open now, so i got some large stones and covered up the nest. The mother got back and spent about 30 seconds checking out the stones and then went inside the nest so it's all good and protected from crows now.

Cool. Killdeer's will fake being wounded and try to lead you away from their nest.

Killdeer nest on the ground, but I think they next in rocks. We had a killdeer build a nest in our driveway stone, just a little hollowed out place.

I think the name reflects the bird's call, although to me it doesn't sound like it's saying Killdeer.
