I've given up smoking for a week now and things are starting to get easier. The first couple of days I chewed up half a quilt, three pairs of shoes and a pillow and wore my nails down on the walls! I suffer from depression which makes things a whole lot more difficult and I've had to fight very very hard but now I've come this far, I ain't turning back!

Thank you both. Never give up trying Rellik419. I've lost count of my failures but now things are looking up.

Did it 7 years ago with the help of patches. Didn't relapse since.

Found out that way that smoking is very similar to Windows:
- you start it due to peer pressure
- you eventually find some pleasure in it
- its becomes part of you
- one day you find out it harms your blood pressure
- you decide to quit
- the first days you experience serious withdrawal symptoms. You find yourself longing for IE. Coping techniques may help (patches, spider.exe running in Wine)
- after about a month things get really better, you find your life is changing
- after three months you wonder why you didn't do it earlier.
- six months later during a cleanup session you get rid of all the associated paraphernalia: ashtrays, matches, lighters, cough pills, emergency virus cleanup CD, dual boot...

Sounds like you too have quite many times before.
I stopped smoking completely about 6 or 7 years ago. I used the 'Commit lozenges' for about a week and they really helped.

Personally I found aids were more of a hindrance than a help because I relied too much on them. Cold turkey is better for me but each individual reacts differently. As long as it works for you...

Yeah your right, It's an individual thing. I got a month supply of them for free and never tried doing it this way before, so I gave it a shot. The trick for me was to taper off, use one less lozenges every day for about a week.
I needed to quit before I went 'under the knife' for spinal surgery. I was hospitalized for a week after having the operation and wouldn't have been able to smoke even if I wanted to. That's how it began for me. I really had no plans of stopping completely, but it just kind of happened that way.
I'm behind you 100%, keep up the good work.

My college campus recently went tobacco free, which was hard on a lot of the faculty who smoke (but they did say they were better off for giving it up). NC is known for tobacco, and we have our fair share of smokers.

Congratulations on making it this far :bigthup

Good for your Erisian; well on your way to adding years to your life because of this decision. Good luck on your continued quest to be smoke free. :)

Good for you! I have been tobacco free now for 10 yrs. Could not have done it without God Almighty and much prayer. My prayers go out to you also. I still wake up and want one. Very evil habit.
Worse than heroin in my opinion. :)

Hang in there, Erisian! Usually it's tough first few months  Just kidding!
Cold turkey, ah! The man's way!
Cold turkey + Alan Carr's book - that's how i quit.

Thanks everyone.

Rod - possibly worse than heroin or at least close.

K1Te - Alan Carr's book did nothing for me but as I said, it's a very individual thing.

Congratulations! My daughter's husband gave up smoking for her when they were dating...always a great incentive. He also went cold turkey, and this was 18 years ago.
