After you create a graphic create a layer on top of your other layers name it light source then choose where you want it to come from. Then with a white or light color (use a radial or linear gradient) with the layer named light source. That way you'll be able to see where it's at. That's what I do. And practice. I love your purple xbox sphere.
I have things that I gotta work on myself like giving my graphics depth and getting them so they are not pixellated.

I don't do much work using the Gimp Lighting Effect, mainly as I haven't had much success with it yet.
