sallyanne, It's strange if all of a sudden you have a password box you've never seen before. How long have you had the computer? Have you installed anything new recently? Has anything else changed like your web browse?

It hasn't happened all of a sudden. I have had the computer since April 2012 and it has been like it all the time. I was just wondering if I could change it so it doesn't appear there. (I know I can give files passwords to lock them)

EDIT:
My computer originally opened up twice. 1 to a toshiba screen then to the user screen. I changed it after a while so it would only show the user screen.

@Wallace, after I type the password in it takes me to the user screen where I have only to click on my user icon (no passwords here) After all I am the main person who uses it. I have another one set up which I only did to see how I could do a couple of things
(I wanted to set up different user accounts for one of our corps computers which a few people use now). I have done that now (98 used to be easy but I hadn't done it in Windows 7 before).


This computer I am having a concern with is my own personal laptop.

It's looks like a password from the BIOS, may be because your hard disk is password-protected(*)). See your computer user's guide.

(*) This means that someone stealing your PC cannot access the disk contents even by connecting the disk on another system. This isn't 100% hack-proof, but still avoids that a random burglar also gets access to your bank references...

Can you right click in the password text area and select show password? Sometimes it is possible to untick that selection so ****** show instead.

Thanks Rod for that bit of info. I just tried it though and should have realized before I did. I can't use my cursor on that screen.
I know if it was a normal password screen I could. This one works like it does in command prompt mode though.

I'm not computer smart, but I have to agree with ofnuts that it looks like a bios window. A friend helped me boot up in safe mode on my old XP and that's how the windows looked. Have you ever opened the advanced boot options menu on this computer as though you were going to use safe mode?

"Safe mode" on XP and BIOS are two different animals. "Safe mode" is Windows without, among other things, video drivers; so its UI is minimalistic. The BIOS is what runs in the computer before Windows even start.

I think I found the reason why I thought my password was showing up on the type your password screen.
It is the user name string and I must have set them both to the same before. I just changed the string to a different name and it didn't change my password
