Is there a difference between word pad and microsoft word?

I'm just wondering if there a difference between word pad and microsoft word. Is it really that big of a deal to have microsoft word?

It depends on what you want to do.

WordPad is less complex than MS Word.

For any kind of document beyond a simple letter you need something better than Wordpad. But you don't need MS-Word. Get LibreOffice/OpenOffice/ApacheOffice or whatever it is called these days.
