So far, other then Virtualbox and that's on Oracle not Microsoft, Win7's been running quite nicely. It recognized all my peripherals without a hitch. It even remembered my ROKU so I can push commands to it via PC instead of my remote. This has got to be the easiest update/upgrade I've ever done for a Microsoft OS. I'm actually pretty stoked. I can wait for Oracle to push out an update to address the sound issues that I now am having but to be honest, I can just as well play content at the host side (or ROKU which is even better) so I'm not fretting it. Just can't hear things while browsing since I do everything in my sandbox (XP VM).

There was talk about no support from WMP in win10, maybe that has something to do with you sound issues?

It looks like Microsoft is making everyone go through their store for programs. It is just like "google play". win10 doesn't come with solitare but you can download it through the store.

Yeah, I think that's the route MS is going to take.

Not this time Wallace; it's purely an Oracle virtualbox issue. Also recently noticed that youtube videos won't play within my VM; very strange behavior. Also, when I wake up from hybernate, sometimes VB goes unstable and I even have to run repair. Lots of issues with VB right now so I suspect a patch will be released soon (at least I hope) since I only go on line via a sandbox (which I'm typing this now in my XP VM).

Might be a silly question but how do we even know it is ready to install. What are we supposed to look for?

You are right Sallyanne. I have been trying for 3 days to download and install it and nothing has happened so far.
So far I have 4 failed Windows 10 updates.
BTW this is not on my pc, I wouldn't give up my Fedora for anything unless I am unable to install the upgrades without help. Linux is by far better than Windoze and I stick to those words having used both now for a long time.

Check you update history Sallyanne. Mine said it failed to update Win10 (left my computer on overnight). I went to details about why it failed and from there was able to install Win10. Will warn you that it took around 1 hour to upgrade, but if you ask me, this had been one of the smoothest M$ upgrade/updates I ever experienced. Only issue I have is with Virtualbox and VB alone. If you don't use VB, then you should have no issue at all. Even GIMP works great (did another Paisley rendition for AnMal earlier today).

It is also possible to install W10 to dual boot with the previous version. I'll wait some time before installing it.

Lylejk - only 1 hour? Wow, my actual download took that long and the actual upgrade/install is still running (now up to 45%) after a further 1.5 hours.

Hopefully it will be a smooth transition ... preferably before I go to bed!

Lylejk - OK; well it took another 45 minutes but now this notebook is up and running.

So far so good GIMP is up and loading files from my main PC, but I will not pgrade the main PC just yet.

Looks like you are right though, a smooth instal, but Microsoft do want to collect a lot of info about what you do and where you are!

I have yet to get Windows 10. I like Windows 7 and I will continue to use it until my laptop completely gives out. I have no reason to upgrade my laptop unless at some point or another I some how am forced into upgrading it.

Last couple of days, I was fixing some software issues in a Win 7 user laptop and saw the Win 10 updates starting. I know this guy has a small-ish ISP download cap so I downloaded the Win 10 upgrade DVD ISO. 3 GB ! what bloat is that.

When the OS is installed, Microsoft assigns the user a unique advertising ID, which it ties to the email address registered with the company. That email address is also associated with a raft of other services, such as the company’s productivity and communication programs, as well as app downloads and cloud-storage uploads.

Using that information, Microsoft is able to personalise ads to the user, during both web surfing and, for newer apps downloaded from the Windows Store, app usage. Microsoft itself is leading the way on that front, even turning the in-built version of Solitaire (the card game that has been a staple of Windows installations since 1990’s Windows 3.0) into a freemium game, complete with unskippable video adverts.

The European digital rights organisation (EDRi) sums up the company’s 45 pages of terms and conditions by saying: “Microsoft basically grants itself very broad rights to collect everything you do, say and write with and on your devices in order to sell more targeted advertising or to sell your data to third parties.”
