Installed Win10 this morning. More then a few bugs; just got my XP VM (typing this message now in it) up and running, but no sound (yes; I re-installed the guest additions but to no avail). I suspect it has to do with Virtualbox and I will have to wait for a VB update to get it working again unfortunately (had to run a repair even to get my VB to work). Right now, my Win7 VM is also hosed. Hoping that an update to VB fixes that issue too. Office 2013, Photoshop, and GIMP (GIMP took a little while since it had to refresh the fonts cache which is a long process in GIMP as a few of you already know) but those programs worked fine. I already had a crash too (Virtualbox caused it) require a hard (power button) re-boot. I think running the repair fixed the issue; time will tell. Unless you are game, I would hold off on the upgrade until other folks like me ferret out the bugs. lol

As I'm being continuously reminded in Morrowind; "You like to dance close to the fire, don't you?"

Is virtual box included in the install? I don't think I have it yet.

Update:

For some reason, my Win7 VM is now working (there were two additional Win10 updates pushed after the initial install that might have repaired it; who really knows). Still, none of my VMs (WinXP, Win7, or Ubuntu) has sound. I suspect it's with an interaction between Virtualbox and Win10. Win10's soundmixer shows up for the VM, but sliding the slider does nada. Oh well. Can wait.

I vaguely remember that screen Wallace. Not sure what I did to continue on with the install. I will say expect your Virtualbox to be very flaky. I just finished doing another hard reboot of Win10 since if froze again after waking up from hibernate. I suppose I will just shut down my VM completely prior to hibernation to see if I get an acceptable result. Sure do hope Oracle repairs the issues with Win10 compatibility. Every other program I have works great with Win10 with no issues thus far.

I'm going to wait a while to install win10. My download hasn't shown yet, but I've received a few emails form Microsoft stating that it will happen soon.

Just remembered when Sallyanne asked. I checked my update history in Win8.1 and it said it failed to install Win10. While there, I saw an option to install upgrade as I recall.

I have yet to get Windows 10. I like Windows 7 and I will continue to use it until my laptop completely gives out. I have no reason to upgrade my laptop unless at some point or another I some how am forced into upgrading it.

If you like Virtualbox, I would wait until Oracle pushes another update since Win10 don't play well with VB right now. I cannot use Windows hibernate or sleep mode for instance period since, if I wake my PC up from either, and have VB on, it will give me an error and is useless (even if I close and re-opend) until I reboot which means I'm going old school now and shutting off my computer instead. No sound in any of my VMs either and I'm not the only one experiencing this issue (trust me).

Check your update history Molly. Mine actually told me that Windows failed to upgrade to Win10 which told me the files were on my PC. I clicked around the error within Update History and clicked a link to install the upgrade as I recall. Chances are, you already have the files too.


To Tux; way too funny.

OK; first , I didn't do anything. I did boot into my XP VM and still did not get the startup sound. While browsing a Yahoo story, all of a sudden I heard one of the Yahoo ads. Again, I did not do a thing. I re-started my XP VM and got both the closing sound and starting sound. So far so good. I then decided to test Win10 hiberation to see if it will hose Virtualbox. It did not. I'm really getting stoked now. Hopefully somehow M$ implemented a fix that didn't even require a reboot; still don't like things that fix themselves, but I'll accept this fix. Hopefully Win10 can only get better from now on.

OK; again I go where angels fear to tread. I'm tired of the instability issues with Hibernate/sleep and Virtualbox. I could not find anywhere others experiencing this. Yes; found more then many people experiencing audio issues with VB. Decided to download the MB Drivers from my system's (ASUS) site for Win10 and part of the installation was something called USB filter. Well, during the install, I lost my mouse and keyboard and waited a good while before the driver started to actually install this driver. It still wouldn't go on to the next set of installs, so, after 40 minutes, I hard-key power downed. When I powered up, my system was still stable (thankyou God; lol). I then ran my VM and tested hibernate/wake up. No problem now (yippee). Then I tested sleep/wakeup. Still no problem (yippee). Drastic step for me but I did create a system recovery point before doing this, but if my system wouldn't have rebooted, I would hope my recovery boot CD would have allowed me to recover, but sphewwwww; glad I didn't have to do that. Still have no sound, so I believe that issue is with VirtualBox (funny; if I leave my VM on for a few hours, sometimes my VM sound will work). Happy I am now. Hopefully my system won't crash when M$ updates next. lol

Still, at least VB doesn't crash Win10 anymore. I know what I have to do and still be able to hibernate/sleep without having to reboot. Still, I wish some entity would fix this. Not sure how installing the VGA/USB Driver from Asus made my system a bit more stable, but, it did. Hopefully it will get better when these bugs get addressed. Had several Watchdog timer resets which, I assume, the report gets sent to M$ to see what can be optimized on their end. We shall see.

OK; someone posted a work-a-round for the no sound in VM issue. Just tested this solution and it works. Better then what I was using (waiting for a few hours and praying my XP VM's sound would magically show up; lol).

I still cannot put my system in sleep or hibernate though with Virtualbox running Wallace; it will crash my system (no joke; actually crashes Win10 with a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION error (basically, the processor gets overwhelmed; I have an 8-core; to crash my system (and I only have 2 cpus dedicated to my VM), says a lot. lol

Just a happy update. I did install the 10.0.1x beta (Virtualbox) which seems to be working fine (even in Hibernate and sleep modes) now. Oracle stated that 10.0.2x was still not compatible with Win10 so holding off installing it for now and sticking w/ the beta. Sound now works too without doing shenanigans. Pretty stoked. I figure things would start to work soon enough. Liking Win10 overall. Very quick boot. Not sure how to get Cortana to talk to me though; I don't have a mic so type my request and get a good but silent answer. lol

Oh well.
