There were posts in this forum about that distro.
People considered it better and more userfriendly than ubuntu.
So I thought let's see what it is.
I've installed kubuntu a couple of years ago because I had a friend in Indonesia who used it.
If he had questions I could fire up mine to better help him.
I don't know if the latest kubuntu is any better but my experiences with mint are terrible.
I made sure the dvd I burnt was w/o errors and then installed on a spare partition.
The install went ok.
When I first booted the new install there was an icon in the taskbar about updates.
I clicked it but got a message that it couldn't update because of "broken packages"!
In order to overcome this you have to revert to the commandline and use 4 different commands to fix this.
It uses nouveau graphics driver but I wanted the proprietary nVidia driver so I tried to install it with synaptic.
It installed alright and I rebooted KDE.
Looking at Xorg.log I noticed it was still using nouveau!!
Then I tried uninstalling nouveau again the broken packages message.
With the nouveau driver you can't watch fullscreen movies etc.
My monitor uses 87x90 dpi natively (EDID values) but mint set it at 96x96.
These distro's are targeted at Windows people and supposed to configure regular hardware out of the box.
In the end I got disgusted and went back to my Gentoo.

I don't use KDE but I haven't had any problems with Mint so far. A lot of people have been talking about how great ubuntu is and I considered going back to it but I have mint all set up just the way I like it and am hesitant to go through all of that again unless necessary. My experimental computer has now become my Mint Computer and I wish I had another one that I could use for other distros, but if I had one I wouldn't have room for it.

I have installed Kubuntu 10.04 on both a Thinkpad T410, MSI+AMD+GeForce9600 home computer without any problems.

And I just love it.

No problem for Kubuntu or Ubuntu here on my 2 computer, except for the wireless on the laptop on Kubuntu 10.10
(it is detected but the signal is always reported as too weak, while switching to Win immediatly become good)

Also for the desktop i have problem for Net connection with Ubuntu (10.10) but maybe only because i am too lazy, the desktop use a external usb thingy to grab the signal but the model is no too well supported... are plenty on instrution on the net on how to solve but are so much page to read...

I would like to know how Gimp does as far as measurements are concerned.
What I mean if you start File>New and use template A4 (or Letter) and you set it 100%.
In Gentoo I can put it in landscape mode and at 100% an A4 sheet will exactly cover it.
I tried that in Mint but it was about 1,5 times larger than the sheet.
I use Gutenprint with Gimp and an Epson RX560 printer.
This combination allows me to print on an A4 cut in half lenghtwise to make a folded card.
Accomplishing that in Mint? I doubt it.

I don't understand this last post. Could you elaborate? I have been using Gimp on Mint for more than a year now and have no probs. I have had more success with Gimp on Mint than windows. But like I said, I don't quite understand the prob.

I like Mint - however, I use the Gnome desktop, not KDE. Maybe it is because I am most familiar with Gnome, but for whatever reason I just don't seem to be able to get the KDE desktop working the way I like.

I have a NVIDIA 9500GT 1GB PCIe card, and one of the first things I do with Mint is replace the nouveau video driver with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, as nouveau + modesetting kernel + my video card leads to a blank screen out-of the-box.

I'm trying to figure out why X isn't recognizing your NVIDIA card. After I install the proprietary driver, my display is at default resolution (1024x768) until I run two NVIDIA programs from the terminal as root: nvidia-xconfig and nvidia-settings.

The first rebuilds the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf telling it about the proprietary driver so that the second program which actually configures the driver will be able to properly read and write to it.

After running both of these, in order, the NVIDIA Xserver Settings program in the Admin menu (the same as nvidia-settings) will allow you to change your video setting as needed. This is a GUI program.

I already wiped Mint.
I have been using Gentoo for seven+ years and configuring your system is much better.
I always compile my own kernels which results in only modules that are really needed.
In a terminal type "lsmod" and check the result.
In order to work for as many hardware combinations as possible these distro's compile a lot
of modules for hardware you don't have but they get loaded anyway.
I configure xorg.conf by hand.
I have used Gnome a very long time ago but I prefer KDE though the new kde4 was a disaster at first.
KDE-4.6.1 is quite stable and I like the idea of different desktops for different activities.
I expect a "point and click" distro to take care of configuring things automatically.
I have had Kubuntu 8 on a spare partition.
It also came with an open source video driver but once installed you could switch to the nvidia one.
Kubuntu then took care of all the necessary changes.Mint simply doesn't.
