Started my computer before and it went to the startup screen where I have to put a password in, that was ok. After clicking ok I never got to the desktop. Windows never booted. All I had was a black screen with a light behind and it was still using power. (I got the task manager open with control alt delete, I didnt see anything to turn off) I could hear it running. Now it wont turn off though so I can try again. Only restart and sleep when I press the power button.
Its on sleep atm

have you tried cutting the power completely for a few minutes? have you got restoration points set and a way to reinstall the os completely if you need to?

I would try a cold boot. Unplug power and disconnect battery. Then connect everything a few minutes later to see what happens.

Personally I would get rid of Windows and install Linux instead, but I don't know if you're up for that.

OMGosh, OMGosh, OMGosh, It actually booted this time and I am typing this on the computer :)
I did what you advised Racer and left it for about 2 minutes and no joy. I did it again and left it for about 10 minutes or more and here I am :)
Next computer I get I may actually get a Linux system installed (I usually get built computers because I am tech dumb.)

No Anmal I hadn't tried that. I was afraid if I unplugged the power my battery would run out altogether being in sleep mode and I wouldn't be able to recharge it again.

:tyspin :tyspin guys for the advise. Now I might not turn it off ;)

Sometimes a defective battery can cause the issues you are seeing. You can test this by removing the battery and just powering your PC with the power wart (not ideal, but you can see) if you do experience bootup issues again. :)

You might want to disable hibernation. I never used it anyway. Sometimes it gets all gummed up and confused.

Sleep mode doesn't reset the system, so any system glitches will persist until the system is rebooted. If you like sleep mode, you should still shutdown the machine once and awhile to clear out lingering problems.
