It appears as if an unwanted lodger tried to set up home inside my Canon 450D and got itself fried in the process. Unfortunately the corpse of the little bug seems to have welded itself to the sensor. No amount of blowing with a rocket blower will shift it, so I was wondering if anyone here has tried some DIY sensor cleaning? If so was it a success, a disaster or like me have most people been put off by the amount of info on-line that says don't do this.
I've taken off the lens and flipped the mirror up and can see where it is stuck to the sensor but so far I haven't dared to go any further than that.
The image above has been cropped down to about a quarter of the normal picture size.

I would first check if I can move it with the brush side of a Lenspen. On a French forum; some one who works in a professional maintenance shop says the best tool to remove stuff from sensors is a bird feather. Otherwise you are good for some liquid-based cleaning or servicing.

Or look at it the other way, you have a good excuse to get a new one. The 600D is much better and dirt cheap

I agree with Ofnuts that you are best trying to remove it physically before using any solvents and smearing it's guts all over the sensor.

I usually use an Arctic Butterfly to remove dust from my sensor.

If you have to resort to solvents, people over on dpchallenge.com recommend the Copperhill Method

Thanks everyone. I will see if I can remove it by using a brush, might have to order one though as the only camera shop left in my town shutdown a few months back when the parent company went bust. There are a couple of art shops left so I might see if any of the brushes from there will do the job.
Actually it's a real surprise to see how much the 600D sells for these days. Have to have a think about that though as I just bought myself a new bike, one of those racer/mountain bike hybrids. Did some off roading on it, probably the first time I've tried that since I was a kid, great fun.

Sensor is now clean.
Maybe I shouldn't have done this but it appears to have worked. I cut a piece of stiff card to 15mm in width, wrapped a lens cleaning tissue around it, added a few drops of isopropyl alcohol and gently dragged it over the sensor once. Then I put a dry lens tissue on the card and dragged it gently once over the sensor. Job done.

I did this and it appears to have worked, I don't recommend that this procedure will work for anyone else.
