When searching the web for some hints and tips on digital painting/drawing came across this gem of a site, although the vids are based around ps, I think most will translate well enough into gimp because of the nature of them.

Broadband on a dongle Moko. It's USB so it's very slow.

The skill level is very high but I do encourage you to check out the library for it is almost a walk through course on drawing.
