Hello

I have a large image (approx. 6000px x 3000px) and I open this image with Gimp.
Then I make a new, empty image with a size of approx. 1000px x 600px.

I can copy the large image into the new smaller box, but I only see a little bit of the Original image,
how can I make the copy of the image fit in to the small box , how can I make it small enough ?

I'm totally new with Gimp, and I can't find a solution for this

do the following:
1-duplicate the big image
2-on the duplicated big image click on "resize image" and set width to 1000, height will be automatically set to 3000*1/6 thus approx 500
3-either use this one if it satisfies your need or copy it into the newly created one

another question : if I copy the image, it's approx. the correct size,
can I then make the image a little bit smaller to fit exactly in the new image by clicking on the edges or something to resize a bit more
or do I have to resize the Original image again and copy and paste ?

to fit exactly the size you want, you have to first answer this question to yourself:
- do I want to maintain the original ratio between width and height?
- if so, resizing again and setting the width to exactly what you want you will get the height exactly as it should be, and use it as such without the need of copying it into a newly created image
- if not, while performing the resize you can "unlock" (by clicking on the chain you see at the right of width and height on the scale panel) and set both the width and the height to the values you want.
obviously the ratio will change, but you answered yes to the preliminary question, so, that's OK

there is another case
you like a different width/height ratio but you accept to loose something
in this case you have to crop using the crop tool

You can scale the layer directly in the target image.

If you know in advance the required size: Layer>Scale layer

To do it interactively: select the layer, start the Scale tool, and drag the layer from anywhere except around the center, towards the center. Eventually the corners will show up and you can finish the scaling with the required accuracy. You can also drag the layer by its center (this moves it instead of scaling it).

yes, you can use the scaling tool, this is what ofnuts said above, or you can go to image > scale image to the size you want.

i succeeded in drawing a circle, and a second circle that is filled with a colour

- how can I now select the first or second circle to place it in a different place on the image, I can't find a kind of selection tool to 'grab' the circle and move it
- can I also make this circle give a 'glowing' effect ?

Make one circle on one layer, then make a new layer and put your second circle on that layer then use your move tool and make sure the (move active layer is selected
Later, you can merge the top one down so they are both on the same layer.

There are several ways to make it glow, too many to list but I blurred the gold one and added a supernova flare but there are lots of other ways.

Put your second circle on another transparent layer, OR, put them both on transparent layers above the white layer and you can use that one for a background and fill it or whatever you want.
Work on one layer at a time without disturbing the other layer, this way you can move shrink, change color or whatever you want. You will have 3 layers as shown in the screen shot.

The general idea in Gimp is that individual image elements are each on their own layers. Then you can move/edit them at will without impacting the rest. While you work you save your image in the Gimp format (XCF) that keeps all the layers. Eventually you *export* the image in some "flat" format (JPG, PNG..).

Hi gimpienew, This might work, If you want to move red circle try putting rectangle select tool around red circle then hold down shift control and alt then click and drag to any location. holding down shift control and alt keys all at once is kind of hard.
