I think I used inpaint (patch-based) to remove the car, but heal-select may be better for something like this. It gives the option to select from the sides, above & below, or all round.
Also I find it useful to remove objects by stages - in parts which have a similar background to sample from. But, inevitably, I have to clean up to a greater or lesser extent using the clone and healing tools.

But adding things extends the potential comic level of the result, like the kangaroo sign and the cricket balls lying around from big its out of the ground. And they are Duke balls too not Kookaburra ones

I wanted to create an "atmosphere".
So. I did the following:
1-added a cloudy sky
2-added an atmosphere of "night is approaching"
3-added snow
4-added a bit of fog
Steps are not detailed as I did on previous interpretations because subject to many manual interventions.

1-duplicated
2-applied a nuance "verde foresta", defined as RGB 34,139,34
3-mode to hardlight, opacity to 90%
4-flatten

I consider this a very difficult challenge, because:
- in B&W there is already an excellent outcome of Issabella
- in Colours there is a very good transformation by the author (David)

Not to bypass difficulties, I did my try too.
Chosen to stay B&W.

I did the following:
1-duplicated the layer
2-applied Retinex (default values)
3-adjusted manually areas of the Retinex outcome I didn't fully like (used a mask)
4-set opacity to 80%
5-added a B&W cloudy sky

Here the outcome:

I should have said we only take things away.
Today I walked past the church and realised that the fence in the bottom of the picture had gone, and some time ago as the grass has grown over where the posts were!
I go past here most days, so I have just awarded myself 0 out of 10 for observation.

Twentyfifth image (David's).
Last one for today.
Enjoyed to work on such a nice image.
Here my steps:
1-converted to RGB
2-duplicated the layer and applied "ambra" nuance (defined as RGB 255,191,0)
3-applied G'MIC Smooth nlmeans (defaults)
4-removed manually 2 residual spots (gimp healing)
5-defined an oval selection
6-used "glass frame" with option "etching" for the space around the selection
7-added an external frame using a mandelbulb gradient overlayed by a golden pattern

Dinasset: how do you apply the nuances such as the one in the previous post?

Hi Pat, how are you? Nice to see you in the game. I didn't get comments on the use of stretching RGB.
Now, let's talk about nuances.
I take a colour as defined in Italy (this is the reason why I use the Italian name).
Normally I take half the value defined for the color (in the case of "ambra" : 127 96 0) and fill an empty layer with those RGB values; this layer is then "grain merged" with the copy of the image layer; the resulting layer could be then set to Hardlight (or Softlight or Multiply or let it Normal, depending on the strength of the effect you like) vs the BG containing the original image.

Thought I would post since computer working (albeit slowly). Found pic of antique car. Nice pic so I used Dinasset's suggestions on previous photos to stretch RGB, and nuance. Not sure if I just made a change or improvement at all. At least I played! Thought color difference made it looked more "vintage".

Almost on the Alice arena, so not to repeat exactly the steps I chose different nuance and different frame.
The flow is very similar:
1-to RGB
2-dup
3-applied nuance "blu bondi" (defined as 0,149,182) ; I don't know why, but "tram" let me think at such a colour
4-g'mic lnmeans (at 75%)
5-dup, luma invert, mode softlight at 50%
6-frame, using a different Mandelbulb gradient and an additional pattern

none of the 2 frames really satisfies me, but today that's what I'm able to do

I have had a go at your car picture. I don't know if it is better or worse than the original!
What I have tried to do is: make the car stand out more from the background; emphasise the reflections and the colour; moderate the burnt-out highlights on the roof and the bonnet.
The orange direction indicators had to go! Definitely not of the period although probably essential today. I was also tempted to remove the air-horns and the rectangular spot-lamps, but that was too much like hard work.

The challenge to produce a ... serious enhancement is too big, and you did already a good job.
Thus, I moved towards a kind of "rewriting the image".
Too many combined steps to detail (and I do not think also anybody could be interested in).
So I just offer to you (and all readers) my strictly personal interpretation.

Twenty-eighth image (David's, church, first post)
The image is very nice.
I didn't remove any component, I'm not a "maniac" in this sense, life is made of ancient and modern subjects.
I guess they all can stay in.
I did the following steps:
1-little adjustment of perspective (yes, for that I'm a bit maniac....hehehe)
2-stretched RGB values
3-dup, applied g'mic mixer lab:
-- A contrast at 2.0, A brightness at -2.4, B contrast at 2.0, B brightness at 2.4
4-dup, applied g'mic mighty details: details amount at 1.4, details scale at 34.9
5-desaturated (luminosity), set mode to softlight
