I'm not a professional photographer but I was wondering what picture quality settings others are using for their Facebook pages, blogs, Web sites? An amateur photographer suggested the "standard" for online photos (Facebook, podcasts, Web sites, etc) is 640X480 or 1024X768.

They added that 1280X1024 is generally considered good enough for high-quality pics.

Another friend suggested the standards may be changing attributable to the introduction of 4K displays and other devices.

They added that even some websites don't comply with these standards and further that this "standard" may be slowly becoming obsolete.

I would so appreciate others with experience uploading/managing content of photos/graphics to/on Facebook, blogs, Websites sharing your thoughts and experiences.

There has never been any standards AFAIK, and it all depends what the pictures are used for. Facebook (and other "social networks") mercilessly recompress images to save bandwidth so there is no point it leaving good quality images on them. And the small print in the EULA will usually state that whatever you put on them becomes their property, so you don't want to give them your best quality pictures.

It is true that with hi-res displays, if you want to let people see your picture in all its glory, a 4K (3840 x 2160) version is useful, but a JPEG quality of 85 is sufficient.

I don't use facebook or any social media for that matter. I never upload my real good images, only my average shots and I don't mind if people use them.

As ofnuts says, everything gets re-encoded, so who cares about good quality?
