I have just acquired a few photos that I would like to make some seamless textures with. Can 'Pattern Shop' do it? If not is there another free program that can?
I know Graechan has produced a script to make patterns but they are not always seamless. Is there a way I can do them in gimp otherwise?

That's a good question Sallyanne and one that I've also pondered myself.
It depends on the photo and if it has the correct properties that lend itself to making it into a "seamless" pattern/texture. Some photos work better the others for this.
This is the first time I've heard of "Pattern Shop". So I wouldn't know if this can be used to make images/photos into seamless patterns/textures.
I also find that Gimp's "make seamless" script/function doesn't always work well at making some images seamless. I've often found myself having to manually adjust patterns made using Gimp's "make seamless" function. To actually have the patterns seamless when applied to my work.
I hope that someone can give us a definite answer to your question, because I'd like to know as well.

Filters>Map>Make Seamless. Save as .pat file. Add to your patterns folder.

Lyle seems to be the one to ask about this. I think he is the seamless guru in this forum if you can get him to share. :teeth

there is an easy manual way to create a seamless pattern:
1-choose any image you like but preferably render it squared
see attachment 3roses 400
2-open G'mic, go to Testing/Ronounours/Faded mirror
3-set both values to 0
4-run it once with the x axis selected
5-run it a second time with the y axis selected
you get a seamless image
6.save it as a .pat
see attachmnent 3roses pattern
to experiment create a new image and fill it with the newly created òpattern
see attachment example

Thanks for the replies.
@ wallace, I heard about the program here and I think Lyle and maybe Anmal even have used it.
@ dinnaset thanks, I may just use that idea.
@molly I thought as much.
@warrior. I will try it again but if the patterns are not seamless ion the first place I didn't think it made them seamless. Maybe I am just using it wrong :(

Patternshop has it's limits (depends on the texture you are trying to make seamless). It does give you a heck of a lot of flexibility; just need to play with it and use combinations with it such as angle and compression/expansion of the tiles. Regardless, it's free and fun Sallyanne. Below are some links where I used Patternshop to create seamless patterns. :)

Just created this pattern Sallyanne (to be honest, I've not played with Patternshop since I upgraded to Win10. lol) in Patternshop. If you want a transparent canvas, just make sure turn of the background layer before exporting the PNG. :)

Very cool dinasset. It looks easy enough, I will save this for future use... thanks for sharing.

Yes; there's way too many ways to create seamless textures Molly. Even Resynthesizer can be used to create seamless textures (and have used it on many occasions). Also, GIMPressionist can be used to create seamless textures. :)
