Hi all,

Ok - I need some advice or help with image viewers...

Here is me on windows - I would have these items open... 1 Thuderbird Mail; 3 Firefox windows (plus tons of tabs); 3-4 Windows Explorer windows; CS3....

I liked to organize things in different windows.... LOL

So now I am using Ubuntu and I am tweaking it as I go....

I just downloaded Gwenview - really like it!!! But I am trying to figure out if I can have multiple windows of it open.... ie 1. Photos 2. CU elements 3. CU papers 4. Kit I am working on....

I am a digital scrapbook designer - so I like to work as efficient as possible. I don't want to have to keep going back and forth in my image viewer to find things I need for my designs....

I did see that "home folder" or whatever came with unity/ubuntu uses folders - but I did not like the tiny views.... I just looked and found that I can make bookmarks and can enlarge the view of the items.... but it does seem to work really slow....

So is there anything better I can use with multiple windows or tabs for ubuntu???

My 1st look was no.... Then I looked at the screenshots again....

When you are looking at a transparent png file - is there a way to have a different background color.... the grey and dk grey squares are a bit much... I would rather have white and grey.... LOL

There doesn't seem to be any user configurable dialog that allows you to change those colors. Looks like it may be in a future release. The only thing I see at present is a patch to the source code (and a recompile).

If you have WINE installed, Irfanview works great. Not sure if WINE is required for XNVIEW but XNVIEW works in Ubuntu as well. :)

Have a look at the "XnView MP" version of XnView.

Using linux, plenty of choice, depends on your needs.

For a lightweight manager, as mentioned before, there is XnViewMP, does all the usual, tagging & grouping + some simple conversions if required. You can set it up to call Gimp from a selected image.

For a quick look at an image, what I can call up from my file browser is
evince, which is a general viewer. Possibly you have a similar one there already 'okular'
nview, same guy who does xnview, useful to call up several images one after the other, temporarily.
Imagemagick comes with a viewer 'display'. Useful for those more unusual file formats.

One thing to remember with linux is use of workspaces, you can have gimp open in one and quickly switch to another with an image browser open. I think ubuntu normally comes with 4 as its default setting.

Thank you for all your suggestions - I may check out some of these others later as well.... :)
