not open source but free, windows only (well i didn't try yet to see if works in linux with wine)

and there you will found also a good and free font manager ---without a font manager more the fonts you have installed less the chances to find that you may need...for sure the gimp font choser widget can't help much except if you already know the name of the font you wish

Thanks for sharing the tile program PC. :)

I actually open the Font dialog in Gimp as an open window.Dock it to my Navigation window which is docked to the toolbox.
Then i adjust the preview size to extra large, and lock the tab.Then when i want to pick a font in Gimp i just select the text tool, click the font i want and start typing.You can get a pretty big preview of the font you want to use this way.Granted you can not see what ALL the letters look like but it works for me.

No...it is a common file manipulation program outside of gimp. XCF is a GIMP format that is used specifically for GIMP, so it has layers, masks, filters ect.
