Molly, I answered your comments on the blog, and added the info here.

To answer your question about Select - All, and Select - Border:

The menu option Select, then All, to create a selection of the entire image (marching ants). The menu option Select again, this time choosing Border, of 1 pixel (it’s all you need, because any more pixels would just move the frame that much further away from the outside edge of your image and push the frame further in on your image.

HTH.

My cats are chilling in the window, hissing at them and my dog has that beagle desire to chase them. They're not afraid of anything! I would chase them off the bird feeder and they'd be back in about 10 seconds.

These frames are addictive. Can't do just one.

The one thing extra I did on mine was to fill in the 1 pixel border around the outside edge of the frame. The lower layer shows through when placed on a black background.

Good move, PM. I've been thinking of an easier way to do that. One alternative is to grow the selection (if it's a border selection) by 1 px, before you add the pattern/texture or color. This is, of course, after you have created the frame, and selected it and inverted.

Another way is to scale the frame layer larger by 2px both width and height. Then when you select all you have a larger selection and the 1px frame falls outside the visible part of the layer. After the frame is rendered, on that layer do layer to image size.

Saul's extend layer to image size would be perfect for this.

Well, Speed, you got me all curious about your tutorial. I played around with it and came up with what I think is a suitable frame using your idea but changing it around a bit.

I added an alpha channel to my image. Then, Image > Canvas size > broke the chain link and added 100 to both width and height and pressed the Center button. That makes the frame 50px wide all around. In Resize layers in the canvas dialog, I made it All Layers in the dropdown.

I didn't like how the fat Square Wood gradient ate up a lot of my picture, so I made a new layer, and filled it with white (the square wood gradient won't work on a transparent layer). Then instead of dimpled, I used Shaped (angular) for the gradient. Also, any gradient will work. You can also use an interesting texture or pattern.

That made kind of a ho-hum frame so I found Flare Glow Angular 1 in the gradients and used it on the gradient layer also. It added some nice shadowed grooving.

On my image layer I did alpha to selection, shrank the selection by 1 pixel, selected the gradient layer and pressed the Delete key.

Colors > Colorize and changed the Hue to the color I wanted, made the Saturation as high as I could, then lowered the lightness to what I liked. You may have to play with hue and lightness a bit to get what you like.
