Most of the cameos I've seen have kind of a flat-looking background. No rounding to it. You might try a cameo image search and see what you find. Perhaps you will find one that has the look you want and you can try and imitate that.

Just thought I would revive another tutorial
When I was at my sisters in North Carolina she made me this penguin in new Janome embroidery machine. I thought it would nice in one of my lacy frames.

My mind balked at the idea of getting those little circles just right when I first tried this. It wasn't that bad though. I'd like to figure out how to make cameos now. A quick search didn't come up with anything.

What ever you did looks fantastic to me.
Anyway, any time I make chains or links, I use black then run the bevel under filters->distorts, then I put on the gold gradient or whatever metal you prefer. The bevel gives it a more 3-D look.

Ha, maybe when I get more experience. All I can do now for the most part is follow tutorials and experiment.
