Accidental Pattern

I've never really used pixelize, this opens a world of possibilities tough.

AnMal · **Posted:** Mon Sep 10, 2012 11:20 am **(#22)**

i opened up this thread again because i've finally found out how to get the result i wanted

. i used the suggested solid noise and pixellize settings, i used lylejk:s painting in g'mic, but instead of just adding a rodilius effect i used graphic novel on default settings. that gave my glass tiles a nice shine! on some of the patterns i used colour map - palette map and on some i ran the rodilius effect but pretty toned down.

i did my best to make them seamless so i can now use them as patterns

Draconian · **Posted:** Tue Sep 11, 2012 7:57 am **(#23)**

Great work! I may have to revisit this myself. I just wish it would generate all the same size squares without the occasional rectangle. I bet Lyle could tell us how to do it. It may just be in our settings.

AnMal · **Posted:** Tue Sep 11, 2012 9:30 am **(#24)**

draconian: thank you! hmm... i may have a cunning plan regarding those rectangles - not that they bother me, the irregularity reminds me of buliding lego walls

.

edit: "aha! just as i thought" mumbled the g'mic alchemist and nodded sagely. "the rectangles appear where two or more neighbouring squares in the pixelled image share the same colour tone. most interesting, indeed."
my solution was simple but time consuming, i filled the pixel squares with new colours one by one - there's probably many more elegant solutions than this!

You must be part fox or at the very least spider to be that cunning. :clap

Now I'm scared.

AnMal · **Posted:** Tue Sep 11, 2012 2:40 pm **(#26)**

s-s-spider?! :faint

please don't mention the cursed things! i am cunning, though

This is a really nice effect, but personally, I prefer the images with the rectangles and such as it breaks the pattern and creates interest in the image.

AnMal · **Posted:** Tue Sep 11, 2012 4:02 pm **(#28)**

hea4rty: i agree with you! just had to try it the other way to see if i could do it though

PhotoComix · **Joined:** Apr 12, 2010 **Posts:** 5870

huu a lot of changes from when i visited

i just play a little with the third image, that from Rodilius to try the different "Seamless" options

1 Map/RR make seamless

2 GMIC- mirror array (with 90° rotation )

3) Map/make seamless

4) map/make a seamless pattern

that ,at least with this image, give very similar results to "Make seamless" but with a stronger and maybe better contrast

PhotoComix · **Joined:** Apr 12, 2010 **Posts:** 5870

as my 3rd with Gmic/infrared simulation

and the infrared simulation + gmic CMYK mixer

Edit

somehow derived from the yellow (by blurring and sharpening, blurring and sharpening, and lastly a bumpmap )

AnMal · **Posted:** Tue Sep 11, 2012 5:16 pm **(#31)**

photo comix: i like that first seamless result, it's the closest to real seamlessness and doesn't destroy the glossy surface. but what does "RR make seamless" stand for? i like what happened with those infrared simulations too - seems this pattern has infinite possibilities

not sure but the author of the script is RobA and about the method used i have only a hint:

humm not that link i gave is not too useful no traces of "Redrobes" there

but RobA visit often the forum you should ask him

AnMal · **Posted:** Tue Sep 11, 2012 6:33 pm **(#34)**

i will ask him, thank you, pc!

BTW

RobA made also some nice "seamless" variations of commune filters

not sure where is the filter page but i copied mine

It seems a single script but include several "tileable" filters

PS note the image should already be tileable, the filters will not make it tileable but will preserve that quality if already present

Had to have a try at this....

AnMal · **Posted:** Wed Sep 12, 2012 10:35 am **(#37)**

photo comix: thank you for those tips! i'm probably a bit too stupid to use that piece of script, but i will give it a try!
he4rty: what settings did you use? the colours look so much like your grid pattern that you showed in another thread (sorry, can't remember where it was) that i guessed you used the same base image - was i right?

he4rty · **Joined:** Aug 30, 2012 **Posts:** 2174

Anmal-after I created the squares, I duplictaed the layer four times, set top layer to burn and merged with the layer below, set the layer below burn to dodge and merged that with the layer below. So I'm now left with two layers burn and dodge set the top layer to grain merge and merged with the layer below. This now gives a good spread of squares from black to white, I the posterurised layer to 36 colours and then mapped to my own palette "Iced Coffee" then followed rest ot tut.

AnMal · **Posted:** Wed Sep 12, 2012 10:59 am **(#39)**

he4rty: i see! i'll have to try that layering, dodging and burning thing. it's a nice palette you have too - not the kind of colours i tend to use but i still think they look good, give a cool, sophisticated look.

the script applies some built in filters (noise, photocopy, blur..) in a way that if the image was tileable it will remain tileable

and you may install as any other script once installed you will find in <Image>/Filters/Artistic/Tileable ....
