Here is a test using the tutorial and the brushes included (first image). I love the outcome.
The second image is done with a Lego brush I made several years ago, using the same image.
The biggest difference being mine is 27x27 versus 20x20 and mine says Lego. In the images I didn't get the levels the same either. Hope you like 'em.

It's great to be back. I'm not here as much as I'd like, but it's a start.
Here is another with my Lego brush. I don't yet have a shadow brush but I am experimenting with using my brush and levels to create the same effect as the layer with the the shadow brush in the tutorial.

I haven't seen a Lego Brush being made available anywhere here on Gimp Chat,
am I missing something?
