In point of actual fact I do think there is a glitch in my GIMP in any case...for instance, when I try to click on path to text, it take several clicks before it registers, when I select a brush..the brush chases the cursor round the page....just seemingly small things but annoying...At one stage recently I removed the whole thing and backed up the scripts elsewhere and then got a fresh download of GIMP from sourceforge to install, because I felt there was something wrong with GIMP...so its glitchy as it can be I think and I have no idea why...it never used to be like that...probably been having problems with it for about 6 weeks...My computer is as clean as a whistle as well...so heck if I know whats going on with it...no probs with anything else.

I always like metallic text but it's never easy to make. Even in xara and Inkscape it's not easy. This is one of those things that look so simple it's embarrassing that I never thought if it but I hadn't. I think I'll get a lot of use from this, and it should be fun to play with different colors. Thanks.

I really like the way metallic text turns out when using Lighting Effects, similar to RobA's Gold Objects tutorial.

I made a tutorial spin-off for doing text. It really gives a realistic metal look.

haha that's funny, as my tutorial was originally based off this one for creating golden text: http://www.home.unix-ag.org/simon/gimp/golden.html

Guess great minds think alike!

wow, very interesting effects. when I did the tutorial I got this:

and the script got this:

I did have to cut about 2 pixels off the edges after I ran the script (as mentioned by another here), but it's fairly simple and easy.

akky it sounds like you have other resources running in the background try checking to see what else is running along side Gimp.Could be something you just installed that runs in the background?

Another possibility -
Maybe you have another program nestled withing Gimps directory (it will see it and run it), when Gimp loads and initializes. That includes any exe file.

Or you need to give Gimp more room to run its resources if you have added more to it lately such as brushes.
In that case try Gimps Uniform Resource Manager filter. (GURM)
You set it up once and your good to go for good.It isn't really that hard to do.Then you call what you want to run every session. So you could have all your patterns, gradients, and brushes in Gurms folders and call what you need when you need it.It doesn't work for plug-ins yet, but it makes Gimp run much, much faster. :)

akky:

I think the big point Rod hit on is the one that will help you the most. Installing GURM. It's easier to set up than most other managers, but it will seriously curtail the memory allocation within GIMP from having every brush, gradient, pattern, palette, etc installed being called by GIMP at once. What you describe sounds like over-extended memory from having too many GIMP processes running at once. If you ran GIMP from terminal you would see exactly what I mean.

I'm new as well and have been looking for how to make these effects. Oregonian talks about the font in this thread (and it appears to be a great resource for other fonts):
