Can you find a .gmic file in your Appdata folder and open it?

bkh1914: I'm not offended or upset. But if it helps, I can clarify why I tried to find an alternative method for plaid. I don't like smooth blended gradients because they don't look like real plaid designs. I don't have anything against them, but I wanted to make a realistic tablecloth design for my wife's craft project. Even if I used palette colors and converted them to gradients, I was forced to also index the colors and then revert back from index to rgb, (those are a lot of steps to create what I am looking for - make palette, convert to gradient, lay out two courses of gradients, convert to index, convert back to rgb, layer blend, add a cloth texture, touch up). And most times, the indexed conversions didn't pan out, so I had to restart the whole process. If palette creation provided the non-smoothed version for gradients, it would make for a whole easier process.

I have Windows XP Mahvin. I can not find a .gmic folder just the one I downloaded from your zip is all i had.

I'm getting stumped on terminology. A file is a single entity, a folder is a yellow folder icon that holds several files. I'm just asking for clarification (not being a smarty pants). Let me toss up an image here...

No problem. I was getting confused also by what was being stated as I reread over everything. So here is my screen shot of my applications data folder.

It's because XP, by default, does not show hidden folders Liana. You need to open My Computer, go to folder options (under tools menu) and click the View option in this menue and check show hidden files and folders. The .gimp2.6 folder will then show up which is located directly under your user account in Documents and Settings (a little different location for Vista/Win7 users).

Ok, what's in the .gmic folder at the very top (first folder)?

If its the file I made, that file needs to be moved to where the .gmic_def.xxxx file is located.

I had to rephrase this sentence above, because if you open the .gmic folder, all you will see is the file. So, instead, copy the file, go back to where the .gmic_def.xxxx file is, and paste it there. Then try G'MIC again.

Ok..I was playing a bit after looking at your screen shot. I copy and pasted the filter into notepad and named it .gmic looks weird (and does not have a name) though but it seems to have worked. I never had that .gmic file just the .gmic_def.1483 file.
My next question would be if I make. (laughing) another filter would I have to place it in that same file too?

Thanks Lyle. I discovered XP hid all kinds of things from me even my applications data folder. I found that and some other goodies. Thanks guys for being patient and helping me.

I was wondering about the filter you mentioned earlier Lyle that david made for the plaids. How do you get those to download? I have tried with no luck going through gmic in gimp.

Once you get G'MIC installed, just open it up in GIMP and then click refresh button.

If you make another filter? Yes, you'll need to add it to .gmic

At least now you have some idea as to how they are structured.

Lyle, David originally put his plaid design in his Ronounours testing folder, has it added it to patterns yet?

He also had it under his own name (it was, for some reason, in my favs folder too for some reason). I deleted the duplicate (now only in David's (Ronounors) plugins folder. Still not in patterns yet Mahvin (just did a refresh to check).

I posted on G'MIC Flickr about Macs and the .gmic file. I want to help, but I have no idea what else to suggest, but, since you do have a fave listed, there has to be a hidden .gmic file somewhere on your Mac.

I have the file sitting there but I have no idea where or how to put it anywhere..seems I cant move it...its in my user/home folder and it is an invisible file..and I believe I might have to point GIMP to it...so I am trying things like that.

I think its actually in with the plug ins which is where it ought to be I think. But its invisible so I cant actually see it there. and the finder wont tell me where it is only that its there somewhere. And I actually now have a .gmic_faves in there as well

thanks for the link...however...first of all it was written 5 years ago. So we have a couple of major OS changes since then.
secondly we are going into uncharted territory forme...I have never been one for meddling with terminal...so if I screw it up I'll see ya next week...when I fix the computer!!! LOL
