What version of gimp - 2.6 or 2.8?
2.8 -If you followed the tutorial to the letter it should be no problem.
2.6 - The instructions may be somewhat confusing for 2.6 users because there is
a difference in brush presets and dynamics interface between 2.6. and 2.8.
On what stage of the tutorial are you getting black image?

P.S. Just a quick guess - maybe your brush was set to one of the gimp default brushes?
You need to select the brush created in Step 1.
Before stroking the path - create a new transparent layer, keep it active, un-toggle visibility
of all other layers. Now stroke the path and show me what you've got.
