http://www.gimp.org also uses the GIMP mascot, Wilber. Wilber is cool. Wilber’s eyes move, and thats kinda disturbing to some people, but I like him. Wilber is a GIMP. Created on Sept. 25, 1997 by Tuomas Kuosmanen, Wilber has taken on a life of its own. For example, Wilber is pictured doing all sorts of stuff at the top left hand corner of the page at http://www.gimp.org (edit: the old web site now lives at classic.gimp.org). Wilber has become a recognized icon associated with GIMP, and may be seen at slashdot whenever GIMP is mentioned. He appears on the help screen when starting GIMP for the first time, offering useful advice. Now that GIMP is becoming more ready to be seen by the general public, Wilber is helping get GIMP out to the masses much like (the penguin some call) Tux is for Linux.

I believe that the Gimps name comes from wilberworks.com which is no longer available. That said i think the "official" mascot should stay as is for identity and historic reasons.

I agree with you both.
I'm in no way trying to change what has already been established.
Wilber, as we Gimper know him.
Is an iconic image that will forever represent Gimp and it's history.

My Idea is,

Keep Wilber the way he is, but add one of those painters pallets behind him with all different colors on the pallet

He already has a paintbrush in his mouth, why not a pallet placed behind him?

Could I have your vector file please? So I can make the icon file (*.ico) and change the default icon on my personal desktop. It amazingly fits with the modern design language (simple, impressed and colorful). The current logo of GIMP (hasn't changed for years) seems odd compare to the rest. I love the simplicity of your logo while it still keeps mascot animal and its brush of the traditional logo. Such a shame GIMP didn't make it official.

Agree, GIMP really need to update its logo ASAP, it's so obsolete now... and yes those are nicely done, simple and a more modern look!

This is my favorite :hehe

Sorry IMHO the original is much better. The orange can easily be mistaken for a coyote with his head freshly cut off and still bleeding. If I did not know what Gimp was for I would be very confused. Not so with the original logo, it is clear, friendly and playful.

Wow... My first thought when I read this comment was "This person is so dark that s/he might have some mental health issues", but I don't know you, so I cannot judge the way you're are thinking or seeing things. This might also be a cultural thing.

When I speak about GIMP with people who are not aware about it, and when we arrive on the GIMP page, I always got "Are you sure this is the software?" or "Is it for kids? I want a real software...".

Nowadays, in 2021, the GIMP logo is just a joke (especially for people which heard about GIMP for the first time), it's so outdated that people think trice before to download it, IF ever they download it. (especially younger people!)

Having said all that, In My Very Humble Opinion, there are, and always will be people who do not want to change anything, static people who do not want going forward, always looking back, and when something is moving forward they get very noisy and extremely loud as they do not want to be distanced as others are moving forward, thus those people will try to pull everyone else back.

Patrice - re your comment "static people who do not want going forward, always looking back, and when something is moving forward they get very noisy and extremely loud as they do not want to be distanced as others are moving forward, thus those people will try to pull everyone else back".

People have simply expressed that they do not agree with your 'proposal' for a GIMP logo change, because they prefer the current logo to your proposal. You have then assigned 'personality attributes' to these people which are probably not valid and for which you have no obvious evidence.

For what it is worth, I also prefer the current Gimp logo to your proposal - I am not looking back, in fact I have always been somewhat forward looking in nature and happy to embrace new things that have beneficial value; I am not being loud and do not feel I need to be in such circumstances. I am just expressing my considered opinion, my preference at this time, and do not perceive it as 'pulling everyone else back'.

As my old father used to say "fair's fair".

Yes, I should tell that I did not know really how to turn this sentence in a better way, agree, it's too raw, and while you were answering, I was thinking to edit it (I always edit ~10 times as I'm never happy with what I wrote), sorry about that.

I say, if the developers want to change the logo, I will go along with the change (who am I to disagree with that). They own the program. The logo in my opinion, does not reflect how the program works. I love ❤ GIMP no matter what face they put on it. Just a thought.
