While it is not necessary to have duplicate layers for the Extract Foreground tool, I have found it useful so that I can retouch any errors using the clone tool in registered alignment - something I have learnt recently, thanks to the advice on this board. ( I should add that I frequently make errors!)

The Extract Foreground tool is brilliant and has the full set of operating instructions in view while using it.

Hello everyone,

I am working with Gimp 2.8.14 on Windows 7 - 64 bit
Yesterday, I have installed the plugin G'MIC 1.6.1.0 beta_win32.exe

I am trying to extract a bug from its background.
It is a bit difficult to do so because its legs and antenna are quite similar to my background (no matter how many green dots I apply to them) :-)
Aside from that, my *real* problem occurs when I try to re-apply my filter, to fine-tune once again it
G'MIC 1.6.1.0 always crashes on this *second* trial...

1. To always reproduce this crash you need to apply your changes done with the filter extract foreground (as usual, by simply closing its window);
2. When I re-apply the g'mic foreground extraction filter (Shift+Ctr+f : shortcut on my computer) and I close its window, to run this second trial of changes, G'MIC always crashes in the end (I am forced to close Gimp as well later on...)

Am I doing something wrong with these steps?

My image is here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/309 ... S_GMIC.JPG

The video where I have recorded all my steps until the final crash is here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/309 ... _ERROR.avi

I can't send the log file because when I choose the ouput as "Debug mode logfile" the txt output is always more than 100 Mb...
I have even tried to select the Debug mode logfile only when I re-apply the G'MIC filter but the text file is always huge (around 100 Mb).

Thanks in advance for any hint ! :-)

try hitting the space bar instead re-apply. After you finish with your dots, press space bar, then if you see places that you missed, press the space bar again and again until you are happy with it, the press escape to close your dots window and another layer will appear and you will end up with your original layer and above that will be your transparent layer.
I just tried it and had the same problem with the two whites being too close together. The only thing I can think of is use your magic wand to select all the white background and colorize it. I am not sure if that will work but you could give it a try.

Hello Molly,

Actually, the error (crash) only occurs on G'MIC when I re-apply (shift+ctr+F) the filter twice on this same image.
This image (bug) is a little difficult to extract from its background (as regards its legs and antenna).
Therefore, I have tried to "cheat" G'mic by trying to apply the filter in several "steps" :-)

Thanks a lot for your suggestion :-)

Try the colorize to see if that works as I mentioned above. Those white fuzzies along the legs are what the problem is, I think, too close to the bg color

If you change the default "Output mode" all should be well.
