Hello there,
Just a word about a new filter I've just included in the today's prerelease of G'MIC (numbered 2.0.2_pre), located at Artistic / Quadtree variations.
I'm pretty sure you, filters guys, will know what to do with it :)

Preliminary note: This filter is available only if you have installed the very latest pre-release version (2.0.2_pre) of the G'MIC plug-in for GIMP. And even with that installed, you'll have probably to press the Update filter button to make the filter appear. That's very recent work :)

So, what does the filter do ?
Mainly, it decomposes an image using a quadtree technique (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadtree), then uses the quadtree information to resynthetize an image with different types of possible rendering. For instance, if you start with this image:

A quadtree-based decomposition will basically looks like this

which means the filter tries to recognize which parts of the images are the most important to consider (i.e. contains the more information, like contours, textures, etc.).
If you re-use these geometric information to draw brush strokes, you can end up with some nice painting effects :

is transformed as

I'd be curious by what you can get with this filter. Do not hesitate to test and tell me !
Here is a final screenshot of the filter in action :

Another nice example, where filters 'Quadtree variations' and 'Illustration look' have been used.

What do you think ?

Increased homogeneity and added some relief using local orientation. No grout (transparent) this time. :)

Two more variants. Created path from quadtree output and then smoothed path for this one (added grout):

I then ran voronoi path of the previous version for this one (no grout):

This time I blended original Quadtree output with the voronoi output result to create the tile mask. Added some texturing afterwards. :)
