Hi David.

Congratulations on the release of official +500th GMIC filters. :hi5
The number of filters is really very impressive. :clap
Thank you very much for the best GIMP plugin and its ongoing development.
What plans for the further development of G'MIC?

You know what would be great to have in G'MIC,
Layer effects. like Bevel and Emboss, Drop Shadow, Inner Glow, Outer Glow, Inner Shadow .... etc.
But because it's in G'MIC we'd have a preview of the effect before we apply it.
Layer effects as it is right now I find it like working in the dark.
Tutorials that use these are set at certain size and it's hard to dynamic play with them.
Having these in G'MIC would provide a great tool for people to play with.
You think it's possible?

I have asked for the same thing some time ago.
The problem with layereffects is: even in G'MIC they would not be live and editable.

In Photoshop the layerstyles are vectorfilters and you can always tweak and change them on canvas, which is what makes them so powerful.
Its like painting with shadow, glows, gradients, textures, etc.

On the other hand, having a live preview in G'MIC would make things a bit easier.

Must be the way Gimp was written. Paint.NET is raster based like Gimp, yet there is a live preview on the canvas itself just like PhotoShop. Paint.NET has no vector capabilities aside from shapes. It can't even edit it's own text without a plugin.

Can't they be previewed in gimp?

Yes, there is a preview, but you tick it, the plug-in renders the effect.
You change something, it renders the effect again.

Its quite clumsy and time consuming.

In Photoshop its fluent and almost with no delay happening on canvas.

And once its done, you cant change it, except by starting from scratch again.
Even worse when you closed Gimp and the plug-in resets.

We have many super filters in G'MIC, but I am inclined to agree with transdoductin.
Most of all I would like a filter that permits very small, subtle distortions of an image - a replacement for cage transform, but with a good preview.

david.

I wonder if (and what) will be the answer to our interests?
Simple - No answer - No more questions.

Just back from a one-week vacation, sorry but I had no Internet connection.
To be honest, there are no clear plans about the future of G'MIC. We'll see, depending on the new features we put in it, and the collaborations we might have with other people. It has been 10 years since I've started that project, and I've been working on it during almost all my evenings.
I understand you probably don't want to care about this, but I must say I've reached a point where I really feel exhausted.
So, for the short-term future of G'MIC : I'll let people use the current version (which seems to work quite well), and I'll rest a little bit, focusing on some other stuffs important for me (particularly, I'm preparing another university degree).

Edit : and of course, thanks all for the encouragements during all these years :)

@Ronounours,

The work you have put into G'MIC is way above the call of duty - we have even seen replies to queries when you have been on holiday!
I think you deserve a well-earned rest!

Thank you for all the fantastic work you have put into this project. I'm sure every other user of G'MIC will echo this sentiment.

david.

Hah, 10 years of evenings before you start to feel exhausted! Not bad :hehe
And after many years I still have to force myself not to spend time playing with it... such an inspiring piece of software.

Playing badminton twice a week has saved me :)
Thanks for the kind words, Garagecoder, you have been a great source of inspiration for the improvement of this software !

Yes, thank you for Gmic. I appreciate all the hard work you do. I think it's a great filter collection as is and use it quite a bit.

@Ronounours You have done an amazing job with this program, especially since most of the time you were working by yourself.

There comes a time when you do get exhausted and need to take some time to relax and enjoy what you have done. If you dion't, as I have seen with many others, you will start to hate the program and without you GMIC will die.

There is a point in all program development, as the program reaches more and more people that the people you are reaching don't or don't want to understand, all the time and effort the en-devour takes. That's the point when you start getting unreasonable demands and anger that their specific desire isn't being done fast enough. That can be the death blow.

I hope that you are not their yet, so stepping away for awhile is just what you need to rejuvenate yourself. This is YOUR baby and it won't succeed without you, so we need to keep you fresh and energetic.

I think that you need another cub of Hot Chocolate
