Hi there,

Another small (and maybe useful!) filter to create color gradients by sampling colors from images along a line segment.
Filter 'Rendering / Gradient [from line]' allows to do this. It's a quite simple-to-use filter, as you can see:

Refresh your filters and you should be able to access it right now.

This is excellent, Ronounours. :tyspin

Is there any way to add a "Number of Samples" parameter so we can have a little more control over how it samples along the line?

Yes I would like that too. I find it hard to control what the arrow covers. Anyway nice filter and my first attempt. Thanks David

Using this filter on flower beds results in amazing gradients as per the bkg in this Image

Just added a new option "Sampling" to set the number of sampled colors along the line segment.

The gradient is from a hibiscus bush not in flower.

Gradient is from the flowering part of a Native Frangipani tree.

Thanks for the update, Ronounours.

I've just had the chance to fully test out this filter and I'm not getting the exact results I'm after.

It seems I'm not really getting a gradient. Instead, I'm getting distinct color segments without a smooth transition in between. Also, the the starting and ending colors are simply repeating instead of filling the entire gradient. Here is example of what I'm seeing, compared to the output from Sample Gradient Along Path, which is more of what I was expecting.

Well, gnutux, if I take less samples on my segment, then yes, it will create less colors on my gradient.
I can add another option to smooth those subsampled colors afterwards if you want.

OK, I've added it, as a new parameter 'Intra-shades' :)

Thank you for the smoothing option. That gives much better result.

The issue that I'm still having is that when the sample rate is low, it's not stretching to fill the entire gradient. Instead, it appears to be repeating the section to fill the gradient. I was expecting to see the gradient shown on the bottom but I get the repeating gradient section shown on the top.

GnuTux, from what I see in your image, it looks like the result you get is quite natural. You are crossing three different lighter fibers, so your resulting gradient have three different color bumps. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how you can obtain the gradient you show with the segment you select.

I've added a new parameter to force the colors of the gradient to be sorted according to the lightness (increasing or decreasing).
Can be useful as a color constraint in some cases.

This is too cool !

:ninja by Ronounours (and even before Gnu Tux, Molly ...everybody had ninja me while i was correcting typos before submit

for the first time a enhancement request was fulfilled even before be posted:
new "Intra shades" control sound as exactly what i was asking here below

It would be possible add a control for colors transition softness ?

As from hard ( i.e if black follow white would be a clear jump with no intermediate grays )
from very soft (white will gradually merge with several intermediate grays )

not sure if there is a limit to numbers of colors supported by gimp gradients ,( i mean a limit lower then the RGB colours ),
but whatever is the limit, a similar option may use the max supported number of colours when requested gradient with soft transitions
----------------------------------------------------------

EDIT

Already solved !
:yes :tyspin

Perhaps that is a bad example. Here is a better example of exactly what is happening,

very cool Tux. Here is my first try.
I really don't understand all the sliders but I would prefer the elastic type selector. Anyway, it is getting better all the time.
