Hey Sallyanne. When you first run the extractor, you don't choose OK; you choose apply. This then launches another window and the you commence to placing your dots (right click for background, and left click for forground. Use spacebar to update the result until happy (place more dots as needed)), then press enter to commit. :)

I do apply and it stops responding after I press the spacebar. Continues to 'run' but goes on and on and doesn't stop.

The preview should come up after you press apply, put your red and green dots in then press spacbar, then press quit or escape to close the preview, then you should end up with your original photo and above should be the checkerboard result. turn off the bottom layer to see it. If you are satisfied, then click ok

what the destructions actually say

Quote:
Description:
This filter allows to quickly extract foreground objects from background in opaque RGB images. Click on the Apply or OK buttons below to open the interactive window and start adding foreground and background control points. When you're done, exit the interactive window: your extracted foreground will be transferred back to GIMP.

If you are not satisfied with the result. click on Apply once again to modify your control points defined previously. To remove all control points. click on the Reset button below.

Does not matter if you click apply or OK, Not closing the interactive window, probably leading to failures.
The defaults have changed to 2 layers now extracted foreground + the background.
Wish list, it would be nice if the 2 layers binary mask popped layer straight into a Gimp layer mask.

You only need one layer to use the extraction Rich (your base layer). Still, I often dup then run the extractor on the top layer. :)

Here's my settings and result (xcf result is miniature to keep the size down; you'll get the gist). :)

Thanks lyle I do know that,
Going back to last November viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11391&p=153916&hilit=qKSflRIaKIo#p153916

The default output has changed a little since then. Was just the extracted foreground, now the two layers.

Useful tool, I use the binary mask option (as being non-destructive) most

@ Molly. Everything looked like it was going all right until after pressing the spacebar. I got the preview from first extraction but the filter wouldn't stop running.......I noticed I was having the same trouble as you were. I can't even do a small picture.

That blue bar will keep running all the time until you click quit or esc.
Print this dialogue and use all these interaction buttons to check how it is going, after you are satisfied with it, then click esc or quit to exit the active preview.

I am still having the problem of the screen going white but I will beat it yet.

Thanks Rich and Lyle. I had a closer look at the instructions. Works now.
Didn't realise it had changed last November.
Is there a reason for two layers? I can see that one would need to be deleted after.

It is one frustrating script. It does a great job if there aren't too many thin steps and so on like in a flower. but you can go back and forth with the space bar until you get it right.

What do you mean two layers Lyle, do you mean that setting up at the top right. Which one do you use.

Maybe I'm not understanding your question Molly. Someone earlier meantioned that using the G'MIC preset required 2 layers. As I recalled, originally it did, but now it doesn't; only the layer you choose to use as the source is needed. Just click on your layer (or if it's only one layer, then your done) and run the G'MIC preset. :)

Two things to remember:
1/ You can select the output you want from the drop-down menu. ie. one layer with the extracted image or two layers one of which is a mask and the other is the original.
2/ Don't forget using the tab key. It will cycle between various combinations of foreground and background displays. I particularly like switching to the one that is the invert of the original. Much easier to see what you missed.
