Not too bad of a circlism result either. :)

Indeed, my next plan is to use this generic shape packing engine to do another (faster!) Version of the circlism filter afterwards.

This is looking really awesome David.
You know what would be cool too is if you could take the actual image and use it as the shape. :)
I could then make some pretty keen photofonts very quickly.
Can GMIC import a Gimp brush for a shape?

Wow, chris, another cool potential banner for the G+ page :)
I'm slowly coding and having fun with this filter. Now, it can take a mask as a parameter, like this :

I have some other ideas in mind, and some debugging to do before releasing the filter, but it should be done before, let say, the two next days :)

Another use of the mask :

Now I'm really looking forward to this preset David. I'm not sure if you ever heard of JIM (jigsaw image mosaics) but I'm wondering if somehow your technique can be used for multiple objects that blend based on colored masks much like JIM does. Below's an article. :)

chris f: another fantastic use of the box fitting filter! good job :hi5
ronounours: thank you for all the work you're putting into this filter, it looks like it could be something really amazing and is already a new favourite of mine.
lylejk: is that how you made those patterns with teddybears and stuff?

No; used DAP for that, but DAP will give you overlaps whereas JIM will give you true "found object" mosaic rendering results (i.e., not crossovers ideally). :)

lylejk: i thought the overlap effect was cool - what does DAP stand for?

Don't get me wrong; I like the overlap feature too, but I would also like to have the ability to make found object mosaics and you can't do that with DAP. There is a program that will get released soon that will be able to do so though and it won't break the bank (got a heads up from folk that know my passion on this matter). Sadly, it won't be released for a few months and there isn't a beta to play with yet. :)

Still work in progress, but this is going in the right direction :)
Now, the placement of the shapes can be 'prioritized' by an priority map you want. In the example below, I've chosen circles as shapes, and image gradient as the priority map, so that big circles are locates mostly on 'flat' regions, while small circles are put on the edges. As a result, the placement of the shape is a bit smarter than just random.
Kind of new circlism, but a bit faster than the previous version I had in G'MIC :)

And by the way, this works for any shape

refreshed GMIC and still couldn't see boxfill. Wondered why and realized it must be in the new version.
