Hello friends,

I've started the work on the next (major) version of G'MIC, numbered 1.6.1.0. The first beta packages for Windows and Linux are already available here : http://gmic.eu/

I'm looking for volunteers to try them and give me feedback.
(This beta is probably more stable than the latest stable 1.6.0.4 to be honest :) ).

Feel free to test, and let me know what could be improved !

Thanks a lot,

David.

Hi David, I tried with gmic_gimp_1.6.1.0_beta_win32.exe and got this error:
Image
With gmic_gimp_1.6.1.0_beta_win32.zip all worked well

gjg : did you mean that running the installer doesn't work as expected ? Or did you copy the installer file (gmic_gimp_1.6.1.0_beta_win32.exe) in your plug-in directory ?

I ran the installer, and also checked if the folder of installation were correct.

I Downloaded the one for Windows 32 bit and got this error message when trying to install.
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
I am the main user of this pc and I also ran 'as Administrator'

It seems to work well in Kubuntu Linux 64bit. Do you need that I test some filter in particular?

YAFU, I'm actually interested in possible regressions as a first step, compared to 1.6.0.4.
I think I'll take my time for this release, to make a polished version.

I still prefer the copy/paste method. If samj compile's it for 64-bit GIMP, then I'll give it a go David.

David,
I have a 32bits PC, thus I've installed your beta version.
No intensive, special tests, but just running all my personal G'MIC filters everything looks OK.
Thanks

First off, Thanks a lot indeed for releasing this new version :-)
It is a BIG pleasure to test it.

Just tested tonight on Windows 7 (64 bit).
G'MIC 1.6.1.0 (....beta_win32.exe) starts fine with Gimp 2.8.14.

Just tested some filters which fail on Krita 2.9 beta 3 as well (where you get already by default the G'MIC 1.6.0.3 available on it...).
With Krita for these filters their preview works. However, they always fail in the end while you click ok (or apply).
I only list some of them below (as explained they fail for Gimp as well): my Krita bug-report contains the full-list for them :-)

Here is the link for the image I tested with Krita - Gimp:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/309 ... SC5387.JPG

1)
The Rodilus filters fails both on Krita and G'MIC 1.6.10 (tested with the same jpeg image).
The preview works fine and I can take a look at the Rodilus effect but as soon as I click on apply I always get an error:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/309 ... _ERROR.png

2)
The Circle abstraction never ends up when I click on apply: Gimp hangs up freezing (once it has even crashed Gimp in the end).
Its preview works fine (same on Krita as usual...).

3)
Burn filter does not work (Preview is fine on Krita as well...)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/309 ... _ERROR.png

4) I have realized that when you *double-click* fast (left button of your mouse) on a filter to select it G'MIC the sub-menu closes down and I have to unfold it again to reselect my filter once again.
Naturally, everything works as expected when I single click on it (the window of the filter opens up fine) :-)

5) Compared to the Krita GUI, with the version of G'MIC is a bit annoying not to have an option (a window where I type their names) to look for my filters.
With GIMP - G'MIC, I am always forced to take a look at the G'MIC filters list I have download previously (much more time-consuming IMHO).
At work, I run Gimp - G'MIC on different computers (rooms) and I always need to have this text file at hand (on some rooms there is not even an Internet connection available to search on the web....) :-)
Yep, I am totally aware this final suggestion (new feature) has been "rejected" in the past several times :-)

Thanks Silvio. That is a quite big image, and I believe lot of errors you will get are related to insufficient memory.
At least in two of the cases you show, this is clearly the cause. When the error message says it can't allocate XXX Mb, it is because
the plug-in tried to allocate some memory and the system refused to do so.
In that case, the plug-in stops.
It also explains why the preview works (as the preview image is smaller, the filter can proceed without having memory issues).

G'MIC is quite memory demanding, because it applies filters always on the whole image loaded in memory, and stored as a buffer of floats
(which means 4x the amount of memory needed, if you compare it with what an usual 8-bits RGB image requires).

Try reducing your image size, and most of your G'MIC filters will probably succeed.

Nope, the double click on a filter makes it enter the 'Faves' section, where your favorite filters are stored.
Maybe I should disable the double-click for adding faves. But I didn't realize this could be annoying.
Anyone else has an opinion on this ?

Honestly, I'm quite confident in the fact that the G'MIC plug-in for Krita will be probably better in the future than the one for GIMP.
I'm focusing mostly on the G'MIC engine itself, hoping that the various interfaces associated to G'MIC could be managed by someone else. The Krita guys are doing a tremendous work on their G'MIC plug-in. No doubts it will get better and better.

Hello David,

Thanks a lot for your reply ! :-)

With the same jpeg image of mine the filter > curve interactive always fail to work when I select the lab color option.
Sometimes it even crashes Gimp.
On the contrary, with the same jpeg image the rgb option (curve interactive filter) works as expected.

Here is a video with all my steps:

BTW, my hardware is:
CPU Intel I7, 8 gb Ram available, GPU nvidia graphic card 2gb Ram

Thanks Graechan; it works. Some of the file names changed from 1.6.0.4 so I just deleted the entire gmic directory and used yours. Only tested the presets that I was familiar with and they worked. What new features do you want us to now test David? :)

Ha, that is interesting indeed. I've tried on my Ubuntu with a big image, and it works.
What if you try with a smaller image ? Does it work ?
Did the interactive Lab color curves work with previous version 1.6.0.4 ?

Lyle, I'm first interested by possible regressions. I've done some changes and optimizations in the G'MIC interpreter code, and what I want at least, is that it works as before :)
Also, Samj has compiled the latest beta of G'MIC : http://samjcreations.blogspot.fr/2015/0 ... vrier.html
It has the support for libcurl, so now, 'curl.exe' is not mandatory anymore, but the libcurl dll is. It should be faster when updating filters, and avoid the opening of this annoying black shell windows sometimes. I don't know if the build from Graechan has been done with libcurl enabled.
Just let me know :)

I have downloaded and installed the most recent 32bit one for windows and went right through one category (Arrays and Tiles) and got no errors.
