Split this off from Release of G'MIC 1.6.8 as this seems to be a seperate issue:

Duplicate of my last response there:
"Thanks for the quick replies folks, apparently the one time it partially worked (accessing the site from the update filters feature which usually has given "Filters update from Internet (partially) failed ! / Unable to reach these filters sources: / * http://gmic.eu/gimp_update1661.gmic" ) it "broke" the installation enough I needed to remove both GMIC & Gimp, do a system restore and reinstall UGH!.

From what I've read while slowly beating WinDoze into submission during the restore, I need to download 1.6.8 as an exe and install it anyway…

The inability to reach any pages @ h^^p://gmic.eu [or h^^ps://gmic.eu ] has been consistent since sometime late last week and has occurred at all hours of the day, which suggests to me local congestion is unlikely to be the cause.

The issue also occurs consistently with the Chrome browser (normally using Firefox 43.0.1)

Wondering if NoScript settings (which I've been getting stricter about) could be influencing this…??? although I tried a few times with it globally disabled which ought to remove it as a problem…

This seems doubly unlikely as I have the same problem with time-outs on a MAC without NoScript…

I've not yet tried through someone else's connection and probably won't get a chance until Saturday

Is there any other source for the windows G'MIC installer? (ie not on h^^p://gmic.eu ) "

Using this link
h^^ps://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=search&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=sv&u=h^^p://gmic.eu/download.shtml&usg=ALkJrhi3RPPbF-NTAyzvAimeiJbVowKPVA
that translates the page

I can now read and navigate the website :coolthup

HOWEVER dowloading h^^p://gmic.eu/files/windows/gmic_win32.zip still times out

attempting to sheat and pasting this into google's translator give:
Sorry, this URL is invalid
http://gmic.eu/files/windows/gmic_win32.zip
Please choose from the following:
Go back to the previous page
See original page

Is there no mirror available?

WhiteRhino, I am having the same issue you are encountering (made this account to try to help you with this :hehe ). As of now, the only solution I can offer you is to go onto a free proxy website and enter the URL there. The gmic.eu page will open and you can download the files.

Other choice is try to contact your ISP provider. A transient problem?

I wonder if the ops here would allow David to store compiled versions of g'mic hosted here? I would say the Registry would be better, but they've been having issues of late. Sad that ISPs and countries block internet traffic like they do; just wrong. :)

I think some sort of alternate download source would be a great idea

at h^^p://gmic.eu/download.shtml
G'MIC plug-in for GIMP only <<< goes to h^^p://gmic.eu/gimp.shtml
installers/binaries for Windows/Linux

at h^^p://gmic.eu/gimp.shtml
" G'MIC has been made available as an easy-to-use plug-in for GIMP. It extends this retouching software capabilities by offering a large number of pre-defined image filters and effects. Of course, the plug-in is highly customizable and it is possible to add your own custom G'MIC-written filters in it.

Here you will find pre-compiled binaries of the plug-in for common architectures. Pick one archive below, and run the installer or unzip the file contents into your GIMP plug-in directory. If you want to build the plug-in directly from the sources, follow these instructions.

The G'MIC plug-in should be then available from the Filters/G'MIC.. menu entry.

On Unix, the plug-in directory is usually located at $HOME/.gimp-2.x/plug-ins/.
The plug-in requires these libraries installed on your system: libfftw, libfftw_threads, libpng, zlib. Use your package manager to fit these dependancies.

On Windows, an installer is provided and installs all the required files automatically.

A list of all plug-in filters is available in ascii format (built automatically everyday).
Check also this gallery, generated by Jean-Philippe Fleury, which shows the effect of most of the available filters on different images. "
Followed by an extensive array of screen shots.
No list of archives or .exe files appears

Working from the zip file: when I unzip the file "gmic_win32.zip" I get a folder full of stuff (mainly .dll files)
gmic.exe gives a stand alone demo

gmic_gimp.exe will not run "The program can't start because libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

It is a plug-in you run from within Gimp. :) Unzip it into: C:\Users\<yourname>\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins
Then go to Filters, and look at the bottom.

It is a plug-in you run from within Gimp. :) Unzip it into: C:\Users\<yourname>\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins
Then go to Filters, and look at the bottom.

same error when:
1 move zip to C:\\\plug-ins& UNZIP > folder gmic_win32 containing folder gmic-1.6.8-win32 containing dlls etc & gmic_gimp.exe then running gmic_gimp.exe where it's located

2 move extracted folder gmic_win32 containing folder gmic-1.6.8-win32 containing dlls etc & gmic_gimp.exe to C:\\\plug-ins & running gmic_gimp.exe where it's located

3 move & run gmic_gimp.exe from C:\\\plug-ins with the rest of stuff in folder gmic-1.6.8-win32 in folder gmic_win32 in C:\\\plug-ins

4 move & run gmic_gimp.exe from C:\\\plug-ins with the rest of stuff in folder gmic-1.6.8-win32 in C:\\\plug-ins
:gaah

EDIT (also tried)
5 creating new plug-ins folder in C:\Users\<yourname>\.gimp-2.8\
[just 'cuz mine is actually set up as C:\admin\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins is that makes a difference]
copying the contents of folder gmic-1.6.8-win32 to C:\admin\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins
running gmic_gimp.exe still gives the "The program can't start because libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." error
double :gaah

Breaking the link like that was considered proper nettiquette way back when (also some sites discourage posting active links so I've not broken the habit)

A catalog of errors.

Rather than the g'mic zip better to use the Windows 32 bit installer.
http://gmic.eu/files/windows/gmic_gimp_win32.exe
Very well behaved, installs the required files in your Gimp profile plugins folder C:\Users\your-id\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins If you are running as user "admin" then it should install there.

What are the required files. A comparison: left side gmic-gimp : right side the command line gmic installation which IMHO should be in its own folder - nowhere near Gimp.

Next do not try and run gmic or any other gimp plugin on its own. That is why you get a missing ...dll error message. When correctly installed, gmic is at the bottom of the filters menu and unless an image is open it will be grayed out.

@ rich2005 (and all the other kind folks who've helped along the way) :yes :geek :clap :jumpclap :coolthup :tyspin

Details:
I wholeheartedly concur that the exe form of G'MIC is preferred (I was trying to make due with the zip version only because I couldn't find the exe form).

After downloading from the link rich2005 provided, I found I had to first uninstall both the prior G'MIC installation (1.6.6.1) and GIMP_Extensions_v2.8.20150403.exe (which provides a number of other funtoys™ but includes a version of G'MIC [1.5.5 IIRC] ).

Installing G'MIC 1.6.8 first then reinstalling GIMP_Extensions_v2.8.20150403.exe appears (too many toys to test fully :pengy  ) to leave me with both the Extensions and G'MIC1.6.8 :coolthup

Note that (just like Pat625) I cannot update the G'MIC filters via the update button at the bottom of the G'MIC window. It gives
Filters update from Internet (partially) failed !
Unable to reach these filters sources:
* http://gmic.eu/gimp_update168.gmic

Finding a solution to the site apparently being blocked thus remains a goal, but it is now an irritation rather than a major impass…

Once again, thanks to all the wonderful GIMPchatters who rendered much needed assistance :thanku :geekon

I suggest asking David to host at GimpScripts.com. He can upload and maintain the plug-in at his leisure.
http://gimpscripts.com/upload-script/

Tell him to upload packaged the site will not except executables.

Tux will do the rest. :)

I went through a proxy server and downloaded the update. Now how or where do I put it?

I put the update in the place you suggested. How would I know if all the filter updates are there? States I have 448 filters available.

having performed the update manually and not having the possibility to do it interactively, the only thing you may check is the version on top left corner: does it show 1.6.8?

OK.
Then from time to time you have to repeat your "manual" update to somehow substitute the interactive update (it's like a "self-service") .
