I've started to make changes to Iain's Noise Reduction filter. I don't think I can improve speed with sacrificing quality, or improve quality without sacrificing speed, but there are a few things I am doing to make it more flexible.

On my version I have added dithering to the output to prevent posterization when returning to 8-bit, and added a control to adjust the amount of detail recovery in the shadows.

Is there anything that you think could be improved/added?

Id also be interested if you prefer more controls for fine tuning, or prefer it kept simple.

For me, the filter works very well with the default parameters.
If feasible, i will consider an interesting enhancement the possibility to choose among different predefined parameter set-ups (like in the digital cameras: a noise reduction for portraits, for landscapes, for night visions, etc) and even the possibility to store customer set-ups.
But I don't know if this is a possibility available under g'mic.
Anyhow: it is already a very good filter

The G'MIC plug-in doesn't have a method of providing presets as such, but you can make favourites which will retain the settings you used when you made the filter a favourite. You can rename your favourites so that you can add the same filter with different setting and keep track of which favorite is which.

In terms of filter design, one of the tricky things when creating a filter is tuning the internal parameters to get the best results. It can take quite a long time to get nice results across a wide range of images. So creating presets for different scenarios would be quite a lot of work. I'm also not certain what the different requirements would be for different kinds of images.

Perhaps it would be worthwhile to add some more controls so that when you can tune the filter more precisely to your purpose before you add it to favourties.

Thanks so much for for the tool! I'm just learning and not sure how to use the tool very well. It would be nice if there was more than one preview area and be able to compare different settings.

Neither are supported by gmic in general, so can't be implemented in its filters
more exactly is possible split the preview in 2, to confront with the original but not to confront with different settings of same filter

love it Iain. I'm sure whatever you do will be good.

Now we have the ability to use more than one core on multi-core machines, I'm having fun speeding things up, and then slowing them down again to increase quality.

Hopefully I will have something you can try out soon.
