I like it to create and use Gimpbrushes, may it is interesting for someone.
On my deviantart-account you find ca. 50 (!) uploads, including the texture-packs.

Yes , it is made from B/W photos with hard contrast. It is easy to make a collage like this if you have a white background.
You can filter older photos using desaturate and hard curves.

Just had a very quick play with the chain brush, varied size, color from gradient, track direction on and stroked some paths - looks OK from here ...
