HI,
I had a simple procedure in GIMP 2 to create an outline around a “text” layer, where a simple interface allowed me to choose the thickness and the color of the border. In GIMP 3 I can’t manage to recreate it.

With the help of ChatGPT I understood that I can no longer use gimpfu and instead need to use Gimp.ImageProcedure, but on macOS it doesn’t seem to work properly.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Here’s a quick & dirty recommendation that’s fully native,
requires no scripts,
avoids potential macOS compatibility issues,
and just works reliably.

The Alpha to SelectionStroke Selection method in GIMP 3 is a stable and fast solution.

Taken a bit further,
you can convert the resulting selection into a path for later manipulation or refinement.

This is just one possible approach.

As a second approach you could try a quick text outline using the Text Tool
Set the style to "Outlined" or "Outlined and filled",
then adjust the line width.

Thank you for your reply, I will definitely try it. In the meantime, I noticed that under Filters → Generic there is “Text Styling,” which suits my needs — it adds outlines and shadows to text boxes.

You can also find text outline style within the text tool options as well.

Fine thanks, I will try it. Is it a new feature of GIMP3? I didn't remember it in GIMP2.

GIMP 3.0 adds native text styling in the Text Tool Options
(Filled, Outlined, and Outlined & Filled).
To facilitate non-destructive, editable outlines, strokes, patterns,
and dashes directly from the tool options.
Much easier to accomplish than in 2.10.

vs three also has border under select. Start with alpha select and then select border making it the size you want. After you have done that you can fill it with the colour of your border. Colour or pattern.

This is also in vs 2 and both are native to gimp. No scripts/plugins required
