I’ve run into an issue while using the Batcher plug-in in GIMP and wanted to report a missing feature.

When I use the “Value Invert” action to convert digitized negatives into positives, the process adds an extra alpha channel to the image files. This unexpectedly doubles the file size. The files I’m working with are TIFFs.

Currently, there doesn’t seem to be any way within Batcher to include an action that removes the alpha channel as part of the processing workflow. This makes it difficult to automate the task properly without post-processing each file manually.

It would be very helpful if support for removing the alpha channel ("layers-alpha-remove") could be added as an available action in Batcher.

I found the solution: In the TIF export options of Batch Convert, ‘Merge visible layers and rasterize’ must be turned off; then there will be no alpha channel in the final file.

Hi, I try to achieve this with batcher, not sure if there is way:
I want to have the lowest layer always be visible/exported and then via batch all others one-by-one on top.
The lowest layer is the background and there are several layers on top of it with different compositions. The background should be the same in all exports.

Not going into great detail, users need to experiment.
This is much the same as adding a background to an animation. If there are not too many images then
Open the background. This need a color tag which you can get with a right click on the layer -> Color Tags. (1)
Open as Layers the images.
Batcher -> Edit Layers -> Add Action -> Layers & Composition -> Insert Background.
If you want, you can also export the layers to separate files.

Another scenario is lots and lots of images, too many for layers. Typically all the same size and planted on a larger background. You need two separate runs.
Batcher -> Batch Convert -> Open a Folder of images.
Add Action -> Resize & Transform -> Resize Canvas -> Resize from Edges (Add Borders) and make them large enough to cover the background. (4)
....and run that overwriting the images (3)
Then
Clear those actions and Add Action -> Layers & Composition -> Insert Background (5)

@alphaeditor As of 1.2.8, you can set the new `Layer handling` option to either `Keep layers` or `Merge and remove alpha` for your use case.

@StingerMKO In addition to Rich's detailed post (thanks a ton!), `Insert Background` was replaced with `Insert Overlay (Watermark)` since 1.2.6, which is more flexible. To insert layers with color tags as background in Export/Edit Layers, set `Insert content` to `Layers with color tag` and `Position` to `Background`. Or you can insert a file there now just like in Batch Convert.
