Deblk, if you want to stick with the build you have, I've taken the Aqua Purple 2 theme and bolted in the coloured icons. (see attached)

Hi, question for Kevin/paynekj... I've downloaded several themes that show them to have "color icons", however when I select the theme the interface changes - the icons don't. I downloaded the Aqua Purple 2 - Legacy Icons and lo and behold, I have colored icons. The question, what's the difference? I noticed you mentioned you "bolted in" the color icons for Aqua Purple - is that something I could do for the other themes?

Themes can either change none, some or all of the icons - Icons that aren't changed by the theme are left with the default icons.

I guess that you're another user of Partha's builds where he has changed the default theme to the abomination of grey scale.

To add the colour icons into a theme...

If you look in the Aqua Purple 2 - Legacy Icons folder, you will see a whole collection of folders: 12,18,20,22 etc
Copy these into the folder of the theme you want to change.

Also copy the gimp-imagerc.rc file into that folder.

Now you have to edit the gtkrc file that is in the theme folder you are changing.

You need to add this line to that gtkrc file and save it.


And that's it done.

Thanks Kevin for helping me out with this. I did as you instructed but not exactly knowledgeable with changing "scripts?" on a mac what I did was open the gtkrc in OpenOffice, added the line instructed and saved in "same format as original". I opened GIMP, changed to the theme I added the folders and the gimp-imagerc.rc and GIMP actually changed to the default theme.

Also, there was a second gtkrc file in the original theme folder: gtkrc~ I thought maybe I needed to add the include "gimp-imagerc.rc" to that one as well, I did - same result, GIMP switched to the default theme.

Don't spend too much time on this - I'm just a super curious peep and wonder why things work and others don't. The build is the same, the machine is the same, your Aqua Purple theme with Legacy Icons works beautifully but other themes don't.

Dalia, When editing code files like gtkrc, scm, py do not use a word processor like OpenOffice Writer or Microsoft Word. Use a plain text editor like NotePad or on a Mac I think it's TextEdit or TextMate. When using a word processor it might add extra hidden characters that could corrupt the code.

Kevin your instruction to move the folders and the gimp-imagerc.rc, addition of the notation to the gtkrc along with Odinbc's recommendation to use TextEdit on a mac worked! Voilà color icons! Thank you both so much.

Deblk, you copy that one line into the gtkrc. If you're on windows, use Notepad to open it and add the line - if on a mac use TextEdit. I added the line by itself right before the "style" line - you'll see it towards the beginning.
