When we are finished with the list we will be organizing the numbers and levels.

I think this is an awesome project, it will help new users as well as old users find the tutorials they want!

Is very good idea ; initially I Googled, a few months for basic gimp tutorials, I found many, but I learned a lot Rolf Steinort form MeetTheGimp and from Jolie's GIMPtricks, like amanda47. I think that is important for a beginner have a good starting point with some basic tut ; I start to undestand how gimp works after I saw some tut from MeetTheGimp and some posts from here.

I really think we should stick to the basics and send the users to the more advanced tutorials after.
Give them exercises in 4 basic yet essential things
Gimps interface
Gimps Preferences
Gimps Tools
Layers,Paths,Channels and their uses.

After those they should be ready to conquer Gimp whatever style they use.
They should also be able to add resources.

Thank you alc59, there are some very good ones there. We will sort them out soon and decide how we are going to set this up.

Hmmm, all great ideas. But, the reason I got Gimp in the first place was because there were a few specific things I wanted to do. And I would look for tutorials in how to do specific effects, I would not have any idea of what tools and etc. that I would need to know about. All I knew was that I wanted to say, cut out the background of a picture, or that I would want to write text in a certain color or make it 3-D, or make a gif animation flipping through several pictures. So...to make a long story short, is there a way to show subtitles on the lists that would let the searcher know what the tuts would be making, not just the tools used? Many beginners don't just want to learn how to use Gimp, they want to learn how to make a specific graphic. I am not sure I am clearly stating what I mean.

Can I just say...as I am reading these....with tutorials such as installing GMIC and Math Map and also the Animation pack...installation different for different OS and Math Map and Animation Pack do not work on MAC OS at all as far as I am aware. So I think that We should not assume that things are the same for all OS. Personally I think its a great idea tho to have this list in whatever form its going to end up and FYI, for the first time tonight I have used quick mask by following the tutorial in the list.... I think I now have a bit of an understanding of it that I didnt have previously in spite of the subtle differences between the OS again...no red button but I did find a blue one which did the trick. As I go through these things I'm sure I will think of more to say, and thanks for compiling the list.

Alos, adding brushes and other things are a little different on Mac but I'm happy to help with that if needed.

I completely agree with this. After the essential basics are figured out we could organize the rest of the tutorials based on what the person wants to learn. Something like this:

Lessons on Making Selections
Lessons on Using Layers Effectively

That's just two examples, but I think we need to teach people as they get "stuck," because that's when a lot of people will get online and begin searching for answers.

When I first started using Gimp I would look for a tut that was labeled more about the end result, like "Flaming letters tutorial", because I would not even know what tools/processes would be needed. I learned the terms by following the steps in the various tuts. TBH, I would pick a tutorial by looking at the picture of the end result and I would decide that is what I wanted my graphic to resemble...it takes a while to learn what the tools and processes are even called, so I wouldn't know what to search for tool or process-wise. Now that I do know the terms, I tend to search by tool or effect, lol, but it took several months to get to that point. BTW, is there a way to add tags to the tutorial lists? That would help a lot in searching. And I love how the mac os tuts are in their own threads, at least for the ones that have to do with general processes, ie installations. Akky, I do depend on your mac knowledge, I still have trouble with the differences between osx and windows.

This topic has grown, with some very good ideas. Once this list is complete I have a suggestion of what would be helpful, a category list of tutorials of some sort. The "Gimp Chat Tutorial Index" (157 tuts so far) is very good and I did a search;

Wow, where to begin?

As a few people suggested, Beginners, Medium, Advanced or for Photographers, Painters, Graphics, Scripts, Seasonal, etc. Whichever format once a short list of topics are in place take suggestions from tutorial authors and users on which list each tutorial would best fit. The lists would be organic.

Since you are discussing more specialized GIMP uses, my Setting up GIMP for artistic work is otherwise one my most tried tutorials, seems popular especially by those who have never painted on the computer before.
