Welcome to Gimp Chat.
You could start by doing some of the basic tutorials to get a feel of the tools and layers etc.

There are a lot of text and video tutorials so there is no shortage of info. Any time you are stuck, just ask.

Welcome CT-Gimper.
There are a lot of good resources out there for the budding gimper. I made a series of tutorials aimed at beginners trying to make fanart. Not sure what type of art you trying to make, but it goes over the basics like setting everything up, installing filters and plugins, and jumping right in with a few easy projects.
Maybe you can find something useful. :)

If you ever get stuck, you've found the best place to get help.
